Customer Reviews

Love it, but be ready to replace.
My son LOVED this toy. Santa brought it for him on 12/09, it stopped working in 7/10. We did use it a lot, however, my son is not very rough with his toys so it seemed a bit outrages to me that it would break in essentially 7 months. I contacted LeapFrog and they gave me a few troubleshooting tips that did not work. I was a bit disappointed because it is such a fun and educational product. I just ordered a new one yesterday so hopefully this new version will be a bit more durable.
Revolutionary toy - slowly became my kid's favorite
I first bought it when my daughter was only 3 years old. She played with it once every few days, and got bored of it quickly each time within a few minutes. She had no patient to wait for the spoken words to complete, and would rather scratch the book with the pen, making incoherent sounds in the process. The book that came with the pen was a bit too overwhelming for her as it contains games about rhymes and phonics, which are at a 5 year old level.

Then over time, my daughter came back to it more and more, especially with the additional 3 books I bought for her. She started out learning about the sound each picture makes, then the sound each word makes, and then (half a year later) how to play games. The games themselves have 3 levels, which are appropriate for kids of different ages. At 4 year old now, my daughter could play level 2 by herself, and needed a lot of help from me for level 3.

So if your kid doesn't like it initially, just give it time.

My daughter learned many new words from the book. She also memorized a lot of phrases from the pen. She has a knack of saying what the pen gonna say, then point the pen and made it say the same thing.

The concept of this book is nothing short of a revolution. What it gives beyond a normal book is the level of interactivity. The level of interactivity can be very complex, much like the way human interact with one another. For example, the book could ask the kid to find 4 pictures of the Flounder fish. She clicks on the first one, it confirms by counting out loud "one", then she clicks on the second and it confirms "two", ... and after the last one it would say "good job". That's not just teaching the kid how to count, but also interactive communication. The constant feedback keeps the kids motivated in exploring and learning.

The tag system also helps me (the parent) interacting with my kid more often. My daughter constantly needs help with the games, and constantly tells me about the new things she discovered in the book. Every time I bought her a new tag book, she would choose it as our bedtime story book, for several nights in a row. If you want some me-time, this ain't the product to buy.

I also bought for my daughter the Leapfrog Leapster hand-held video console. While the Leapster is very interactive by itself, my daughter doesn't like it as much. The book has much better graphics that the tiny low-resolution screen on the Leapster can't compare. The physical touch and feel of the book pages is also much more intuitive for kids.

Other info for parents:

The tip of the Tag pen is as sharp as a normal pen, so don't give it to kids below 3 year old, in case they poke their eyes out.

The books are quite expensive compared to normal books, but what you're paying is also the voices, sound effects and games too.

The Tag pen shuts down when not used for 5 minutes by itself to save battery, as kids often forget to turn it off. The two AAA batteries do last a reasonable amount time, although I use rechargeable batteries anyways since I already have them.

You must have internet connection and USB port on your computer to be able to download voices for new books. The software fine for both Windows XP 32-bits and Windows 7 64-bits. Although I can't store too many stories into the pen, it's rather easy to transfer them in and out using the computer software.

As far as durability, it's been working fine. The painted symbols on some buttons are rubbing off.
Great Idea
The Tag Reader is a really great idea, but needs some fine-tuning. Every time my young, impatient child wants to read a new story I should not have to wait through 20 minutes of updates, only to have the battery run out. The battery runs out very fast. Somehow it even ran out sitting unmoved in the closet for 3 months. When the battery is low, most of the remaining power is used up by the incessant "Time to change your battery!" message. When is it Not time to change my battery? Annoying! There is also a message about your "TAG Points & Rewards" every time you turn the pen on which isn't necessary. I know whether I've plugged it into the PC or not, and my toddler doesn't care. PS: Why not Mac compatible? Finally, how hard would it be to inscribe a little "TAG" emblem on the USB cable. Most of us have 10 or so and finding the right one takes ages. (I wrote in my own label.) Good toy; needs some improvement.
Poor quality!
This is a great and fun toy...when it works. The first one we owned stopped working (it would turn on, but the camera function that reads the books quit working) after using it for about 8 months. After contacting Leapfrog customer service, they replaced the pen, no questions asked. When we received the replacement it worked great at first and then after 1-2 months it had the same problem as our first one. This time when I contacted customer service they refused to replace it because it was past their now "1 month warranty". Perhaps they now realize how poorly made their product is and can insure that this $50 toy works more than a month! Very disgusted and stuck with some very expensive books!
My kid loves it but only 5 books at a time!?
My 3 year old likes her tag alot, but I've just been convinced to never buy another Tag book again. What's the point, when I can't fit any more book on the measly 16 MB tag reader? If I get another book for her, I'll just have to remove some other book that she likes. No doubt won't be popular half way through a road trip when her favorite book suddenly stops working.

Memory is SO cheap? Very weird, but otherwise a good product.

Customer Reviews

great toy and learning tool!
we've only had this toy for a month or so and we love it!! it's been incredibly helpful for my 2 yr old boy who had shown very little interest in drawing or writing. he knows all his letters, numbers and shapes but wasn't able to draw any of them but in the past 2 weeks he's been drawing distinct shapes and letters and he's excited about it!

it's also been awesome for the other 2 year old boy that i sit for. his drawing and writing skills are excellent but he's still mastering his letter, number, and shape recognition. both boys also already have the LeapFrog My Pal Scout so they enjoy hearing scout's voice on another toy.
Great for Trips
I purchased this for my 3 year old son for a long car trip. He seemed to like it. I would say it captures his attention for about 10 minutes at a time. He occasionally picks it up while at home and enjoys playing with it. He isn't super interested in learning to write just yet, but I think it will be helpful if given time. As an FYI the screen actually doesn't activate anything, its just there for the kids to trace on (think one of those magnetic sheets with a small plastic film in front), but not an issue for me.
Great toy for learning and play!!!
I bought this for my son's 5th birthday last year, who loved it and had so much fun with it. That was until my youngest son who was 2 at the time, found it one day and started playing with it. He LOVED it and couldn't put it down. It went everywhere with us and he loved learning to write his ABC's. Both my boys still play with it and are still having just as much fun learning from this system today, as they did over a year ago when I bought it. What a great toy and another A++++ from Leapfrog. I just ordered the Leapfrog Laptop Computer for my little ones 3rd birthday next week. I know his going to love it and have just as much fun learning with it as he did the Leapfrog Scibble and Write.
Highly Recommend this item!!!
Now my son likes to write!
Absolutely phenomenal! It was like pulling teeth trying to get my 4 yr old to practice writing his letters and with this toy it makes it so much fun. He uses it is on his own and has really come along way. I love it!
Awesome for a preschooler learning their ABC's
I got this for my 4 year old son who is going into his second year of preschool. He knows most of his letters but we wanted him to start working on writing them. I got this for him and the day we received it he started playing on it and caught on immediately!!! It was abaoslutely amazing. The way the Scribble and Write is set up is WONDERFUL. The recording says the letter they pick and slowly has dots on the screen showing how the letter is formed. My son then traced over the dots and then the dots disappear and they can see the letter that they made, which made him very happy and proud. I know this toy is one I will be happy I bought when he starts back to school and will be able to write his name correctly. Thanks LeapFrog!

DO NOT BUY -- COMPREHENSION OF WHAT?
I couldn't see the educational value of this video due to all of the "cross-gender" scenes as well as things that made the boys look inferior. Examples are: Lily is director, boy pig messes up, makeup robot applies lipstick to Dad frog, Dad frog is the "Mama Pig" in the play, punctuation band has Prof. Quigley with long hair, boy pig jumps in arms of girl pig twice, boy wolf is Dot. Later Dot is the giant in Jack & The Beanstalk.

Very disappointed in this DVD, since Letter Factory, Talking Words Factory (1 & 2) and Math Circus were SO GOOD. I would not let my boys watch this DVD. It's a shame that parents have to screen educational videos for such a young age.
Superb learning tool
I first purchased this for my niece whose reading skills used to be below her class average. The Leapfrog products have since changed her life for the better. She is now one of the best readers in her school and I am a grateful Leapfrog customer.
Good DVD
I got this for my 3 yr old to watch. She loves the 3 little pigs story and has picked up the meaning of commas, periods, and exclamation points. Not sure if she's actually picking up how to read the actual words during the story, but she's just three, and this DVD is more for educational entertainment other than all the Disney princess cartoons she watches. I'm sure my 3yr old is starting to recognize the words she sees during the DVD.
My son loves it!
I personally just thought it was okay but he loves it! He is learning so much. It is a really good way for kids to learn. I thought it was boring an uninspired but they must really get on the kids level. I have even had a friends hard to handle 7 year old at my home and he was even quiet when watching. Good buy!
A must have
My son LOVES watching the Leap Frog video series. He is learning so much from the videos. I would recommend them to anyone who has young children.

Customer Reviews

The toy is fine as long as it works, Leapfrog ... not so much.
I purchased a Leapster 2 for my 5-year-old grandson, along with four games, which he enjoyed immensely. The device suddenly stopped working after a few months, although it had not been abused and was in pristine condition. I wrote to Leapfrog in July asking for help and first they recommended cleaning battery contacts, etc., which I did to no avail. I sent them pictures showing what I had done. I asked if I could return the unit for repair but they said instead that I should deface the front of the device by writing a RMA# (which they provided) on it with a black magic marker. They said if I sent a picture of this, along with scans of my receipt from amazon.com then they would replace the unit. I thought this was nice of them until I realized months later that they were just giving me the run-around.
There were many emails back and forth, twice they asked me to resend the proofs that I had already sent them, and at the end of each email they wrote "..we have already processed the replacement and rest assured this will come in the mail within 10 to 15 business days." However, I have never received the promised replacement. I am angry at being lied to. I provided them with everything they requested and followed their instructions to the letter. Consumers should be aware that they likely cannot trust the Leapfrog customer service department.
Durable Fun Education Toy
My daughter received this as a gift and now her little sister (3) uses it also. this is a great learning tool that is fun and durable. My daughters love playing with it, but the youngest has not learned to treat it with care.
My 4 year old daughter LOVES her leapster!!
I bought this for my daughter for her 4th birthday(she has the pink one), she LOVES IT!! She wants to play it all the time. It very easy to set up and download the first "free" game. I also bought the Tinker bell game. She LOVES her Tinker Bell game. It's very educational and she'll be able to learn and play for sometime!
I would recommend this to any parent who has a child from 4-8.
Stylus doesn't work, and leapfrong cust. serv. is a nightmare
I ordered this for my daughter and gave it to her just in time for a long car trip we're leaving on. She opened the unit, and as she opened each of the 4 games I got to go w/ it, she got more and more excited to play it! Imagine our disappointment when we popped the beloved princesses into the unit, waited 15 minutes for my husband to register it on their website (not optional,) and sat through a ridiculously long series of intro screens that you have to endure EVERY TIME you put a new game in only to find out the stylus really had about 30% functionality. This was last night. She tried to play the games, but as the stylus is garbage, she got very frustrated and gave up on them. This morning we tried again, only to have the stylus not work at all! I call leapfrog to request a refund, with the expectation that this would not be a big deal for a defective unit, and I would go out today and buy one in a store. Now imagine my anger when I get through to leapfrog in India, I'm asked a series of identifying questions, email, phone number, etc. (which I had to keep repeating b/c of the language barrier) before I can even explain the problem. Then I'm told that if I want a refund, I have to ship the unit back, along w/ the headphones that don't work either, at my expense, and that's only after they give me a return authorization number. To get a replacement, I have to write the RAN on the screen in sharpie, take a picture of it, scan the receipt, and send it to my friend in India. I'm not kidding. Why they can't just send a self-addressed envelope or box w/ the new unit is beyond me. I should expect my (hopefully) functioning unit in 10-15 days. So, I'm out of luck for our very long drive. Below is a copy of my instructions for getting a working toy for which I have already paid. Skip this thing, or be prepared for a huge headache and very disappointed child.

We apologize for the inconvenience & for the trouble you are experiencing right now.
Below are the instructions you need to follow in order to receive your product replacement.
You will need to scan & send a copy of the receipt, and also deface the product with the following RMA# xxx Once this is done you can email a photo of the defaced product.
Once we receive this information we will enter it into our system, and process your replacement item to be shipped.
Please note: Once we receive your copy of the receipt, or picture of the defaced product it can take up to 10 to 15 business days for you to receive a replacement item.
Should you need further assistance please let us know.
Thank you.
Died after 3 days
I cannot believe that this game did not last more than 3 days after presenting my 5 y-o with it. This product is not durable I do not recommend that any buys it. Yes, it is a fun tool, etc. But it doesn't last long, the touchscreen being the main purpose of using the device is the 1st thing to go. Once that is unusable there isn't much else you can do with this game other than to use it as paperweight TSK!!!!

Leap Frog - My First Leap Pad Learning System

Leap Frog - My First LeapPad Learning System

Customer Reviews

Just plain inexplicably stopped working
We purchased this toy last year (2008) and it was used minimally since then. After the first few months the sound started getting weaker and weaker. We tried replacing the batteries but the sound just got worse. Two months ago the toy just died and we could no longer use it. I spent money on both the LeapPad and an extra cartridge and now feel ripped off since it was clearly a defective product. We are now very careful about any product from LeapFrog since the build quality of this product was so poor that it should have never been sold.
Great car toy and bed time activity!
Both my kids enjoyed their My First LeapPad - the different stories and activities really held their attention! My son loved the Thomas and Cars and Katie loved the Wiggles. It was difficult at first to keep the cartridges together however we bought a special bag for it and we still have all of them.
I highly recommend this product! Make sure to keep plenty of batteries on hand!
Gramma Pat
I had to send this Leap System back but I totally believe I will get another in return from the store. My grandson loves the Leap products and cannot wait to get the new one.
Don't waste your money! Leapfrog doesn't make replacement parts for this anymore!
My daughter likes her My First Leappad, but after several months use, the pen has wires showing! I called Leapfrog and after a series of frustrating phone calls, I find out that they don't make the replacement pen for the My First Leappad anymore! At first the customer service agent told me they have the pen and I paid for it. The package I recieved in the mail had an old leappad system that doesn't work and 2 pens that don't fit my leappad. When I called back, it was a 2 hour ordeal. Finally, I spoke with a supervisor who told me that despite the fact that it was their mistake, I had to pay to ship everything back to them, then they would refund my money! Not only am I upset by this treatment, but I can't believe they don't make the pens anymore. I have invested in a lot of books for this leappad and now it is useless. What a waste of money! I cannot in good conscience buy from LeapFrog again!
