Customer Reviews

I like it, sort of
I don't really *like* the book's subject matter, but it is useful. It has some very good ideas, as well as some useless ones- Some of the prestige classes just don't get enough of a boost.
Pleased with the Dark.
I am very pleased with this product. I have always had an interest in stories and accessories with a darker bent. The 'knight in shining armor' was never all that attractive to me. This book is an invaluable tool for anyone looking to try the darker side of roleplaying.
Book of Vile Darkness (Dungeons & Dragons d20 3.0 Fantasy Roleplaying Supplement)
Ok i bought this book and i was expecing differnet ways to kill my PCs.
All this book had in it were the obvious ways to kill them (ex. guillotine).
Even though this book didn't have any "new" ways to kill PCs it is still a good book and gives many new feats and new items.
If you are a DM and want to add some evil into your campaign or if you a a PC and you want to be the most evil you can be then this book is for you.
Not quite vile enough for my standards
Monte Cook isn't a bad writer but I felt that this definitely wasn't one of his strongest books. For a book about Vile Darkness I felt it was just another source book to pump up monster abilities and powers. Oh well, guess it's too much to ask for substance these days in the big world of 3.5E.
Roleplaying the vile
This item is a perfect addition to any campaign of experienced players, I do not recommend it to newly players because it's a little tricky.

Bad shipping
Condition said "acceptable" but apparently that is a matter of oppinion... On top of that the bad shipping did nothing to help to the books condition (it was shipped in something that resembled a plastic bag).
3.0 is the way to go!
3.0 is a great system at an affordable price! The rule variants are totally simplified, yet still elaborate enough to make for a VERY satisfying adventure that will leave players wanting more. If your looking for a great, affordable gaming expierience, look no further.
Major oversight
This product had major editing problems. Several pages were not printed correctly; I was very disappointed to discover that large portions of the book had repeated page numbers. For example, pages 33-40 were repeated twice, then went directly to page 57. This happened all over the copy. Completely unacceptable for the seller not to have at least thumbed through the product beforehand.
EXCELLENT BOOK
IT'S BEEN AROUND 25 YEARS SINCE I PLAYED D & D. MY SON AND HIS FRIENDS EXPRESSED INTEREST IN LEARNING TO PLAY, SO WE STARTED HUNTING NEWER BOOKS. I WAS VERY IMPRESSED WITH THE UPDATED VERSION. ARTWORK WAS EXCELLENT AND MY SON EXPECIALLY LIKED THE INCLUDED CD FOR CHARACTER CREATION. WE WERE EXTREMELY PLEASED WITH THE PURCHASE.
3.0 is STILL better than 3.5
I wouldn't listen to anyone that claims the "new and improved" 3.5 is any bit "new and improved".

3.0 is truly the right blend of D&D tradition and sound game mechanics. 3.5 is a pile of garbage house-rules for actual D&D crafted by a new batch of "limited" designer minds.

This book is D&D 3rd edition, no other.

..all the negative points...
If you're considering getting this edition. Do it. I've read all the negative points about this version. But I heard them all before when 3.0 came out. Nothing has changed, people will complain and then play it and start understanding how it works and start liking it. Like with 3.0. I was one of the people who refused to play third edition. And finally a friend convinced me to play it and i was amazed at how stupid I was for not updating sooner. And when i heard about 4th edition I had some apprehension but remembering my days when 3rd edition came out I gave it a chance and really enjoyed it. The biggest complaint I've read is no multiclassing, but there is. It's just not covered in the core player's handbook. Which is fine. I love 4e, it's faster paced. And as A DM I can spend more time preparing my STORY instead of having to stat everything out completely.

Remember, there's a famous quote, but a very important individual to D&D:

"The secret we should never let the gamemasters know is that they don't need any rules." - Gary Gygax. If you don't like the rules, honestly you don't need any of them.

It's collaborative storytelling. And 4e makes it much easier to do. Yes they 'dumbed' down the rules... You should read that as they made the rules much easier to interpret and follow. And guess what, GM's Fiat is the most important rule. It's easier to teach someone how to play 4e than 3rd. And about the compatibility issues from 3rd edition to 4e, if you can't convert your NPCs over then maybe you shouldn't be Dungeon Mastering. seriously, it's not hard. And no DM worth his weight in salt should have problems.
Video Game in Book Format
I have played ALOT of online games and DnD 4th edition is literally a video game in book format. Great if you want to play a video game style RPG. Not so great if your a real avid gamer of days gone by and enjoy using your imagination and creative gaming. Every class is FORCED into a role, its a "fix" by the game designers.

Honestly this revamp was a ploy by the game owners to get more money by forcing everyone to buy new books. And to make the Dungeons and Dragons line their own they destroyed the previous game so they could make a new game then restamp it with the DnD logo and sell it to all us geeks.

That said it depend on you playstyle. Its NOT my cup of tea for sure. If you like playing a pen and paper game that plays just like your playing Everquest 2 then have fun with new game they call "DnD 4th edition".
What the game should have always been.
I have played D&D through all editions of the game, and I have to say that this, by far, is my favorite. For those familiar with d20/3rd edition/3.5 edtion, know that this a radical departure in lots of ways, but after a quick run through of the player's handbook, you'll be right at home. I sat down at the game table for the first time in 8 years last night and did not feel like I missed a beat. It is a great system. You'll experience things in 4th edition you've never experienced before: entire game sessions without a rules book open on the table, combat encounters running start to finish without a pause to debate the finer points of some bizarre ability, and even creating balanced encounters for your party without play testing the night before!

In short, 4th edition does exactly want you want for your D&D group, it gives a solid, easy to follow framework for your adventures then gets out of the way - like rules should.

For all of the talk in other reviews of 4th edition being "roll play" and not roleplay or it being for power gamers, I don't buy it. Nothing in 4e prevents you from roleplaying and your groups adventures no more require lots of combat than any other edition. I really just can't see the gripe here. Creativity is still rewarded, the open world "I can do anything" possibilities still exist. I honestly think these people are playing a different game.

That being said, I do have one major gripe about 4e and it can be said of most iterations of the game - too many blasted book. 3 volumes of the player handbook, 2 dungeon masters guides, 3 monster manuals plus a metric ton of suppliments make being a completionist almost impossible. I also thought taking some of the "core" classes out of volume 1 of the player handbook and moving them to volume 2 was just plain cheap.

In short, if you want to play and have fun, if you want to bring your kids into the game, or if you don't have hours upon hours to prepare to play you simply cannot go wrong with this set especially at Amazon's price.
4e Gamer Review
The newest edition of the Dungeons and Dragons saga is simple. Convenient and expensive to attracted new players with new cash. But mechanically, the system is a step back in gamer evolution. It does cater to amine' fans and the WOW crowd. But doesn't offer the depth or insight experienced gamers crave. If you're new to Role-playing, start here. If you're an experienced gamers, this product is a flaccid, stinky bomb.

Synopsis - if you don't know what's good in RPG, this is a learning experience. If you're already experienced, pass on this product.
A great Deal
I bought this book for my son in Amazon for $50 and it was used. I came in an excellent condition and my son had a lot of fun with it .

Helped me a lot
Now i can roll secret dice in secret, and i have a nice cheat-sheet for any little bits of info i can't remember. If you are a DM for a 4E game i recommend getting this, it really does help.
Dungeon Master's Screen
my DM is totally in love with this, it has saved us a lot of time in game, no more running through the books, and getting lost in pages, it is all there right in front of the DM's face
Pretty Good
This DM Screen, for the most part is useful. the hard material that its made of is durable and resistant. the info is useful, but i don't like the fact that wizards posted an update/fix on their website 2 days before the actual product shipped... apart from that, all the info you get from the screen can be used at some point of a campaign or another. the screen is pretty wide so make sure you have a big enough table to put it on :)
Useful aid and nice quality
The 4th Edition DM screen offers a variety of handy reference tables for the DM's quick reference. The tables are generally ones that are used regularly, particularly the breakdown of the various states combatants may be suffering from. Others, such as the price of a meal, may not be terribly necessary to have visible at all times, but overall the right information is here to accelerate the game pace.

The screen has four panels and is formatted in a landscape style rather than a portrait. The quality of the cardstock is excellent, very sturdy and should last quite a while. The side of the screen facing the players has an attractive mix of monsters rendered in the typical 4E style.

A nice, simple product that does what you expect it to.
Awesome Screen
The screen is just the right height and width to hide my DM stuff from the rest of the crew. It's really sturdy and should hold up really well. The kids also like the glossy pictures facing them when they play. The DMs side has a ton of stats and roll results. I had picked up another set of screens thinking they were for D&D, but they were for some other role playing games and were really flimsy, too tall and not wide enough.

excellent condition
The used book I ordered was in great condition. It was a gift for my husband and he loved it!
3.5 PHB
The book arrived safely, There was some very slight wear on the corners, which had been noted in the sales description. I was satisfied with the purchase.
This is still the best...
This is the best system for role playing in the fantasy genre yet devised. I think this needs to be stated with the new Pathfinder game system mod coming out. This is easily understood and played, yet is complex enough to allow for interesting play and has infinite house rule potential. There have been a couple of attempts to "upgrade" this system by making it "simpler", but so far, these attempts have done nothing but increase the complexity by decreasing the intuitiveness of the rules and widen the appeal to those interested in playing a video game on the table top. I'm sure that everything I said has been said a million times, and has been said about this book. But the truth is, if you have a negative experience with a game system, you need to examine the group you play with, not the rules.
never recieved said order
not much to say, e-mailed the company twice and they never sent the book, but they sure took the cash for it. would not tell any one to order from this company, and if you are a service personnel dont waste your cash with this company.
The essential D&D book
If you want to play D&D, you need to buy this book. This book has the basics for any player. It has a good variety of classes, races, and items. It has helpful reference for playing the game, and is good for people of all skill levels. In my opinion, 3.5 is more balanced than version 4. This is a great investment.

PCN Review: Demon's Souls

It's nothing slighting, but Demon's Souls hates you.  It hates the sound of a child's laughter as he frolics through a field of flowers on a hot summer's afternoon.  It hates the scent of fresh brewing coffee, percolating in the early hours of the morning.  Demon's Souls hates the have the impression of a woman's touch, the enchanting vista of Hong Kong's skyline at dusk from Kowloon, and the taste of a letter for letter chilled beer after a long day of work.  It hates everyone and everything privy to the concepts of enjoyment and happiness.  Excessive to say, this game is not for everyone—it’s for no one, or so I first thought.

But not to get ahead of myself—let me back up for a second and tell you a little bit about Demon's Souls.  The mystic kingdom of Boletaria has been enveloped in an ominous, evil fog.  None who have ventured forth into this mist have returned, trapped in Boletaria as a panache.  Enter you: the nameless hero.  You're greeted with a robust character creator, providing the tools to mold yourself into anything from an epic Viggo Mortensen doppelganger to a nose-less Michael Jackson clone. The type options are just as diverse: knight, backstabbing rogue, regal magician—you name it, it's here.  You'll nutritious off against zombies, demon knights, dragons, and your standard array of Dungeons and Dragons adversaries.  You'll level up your hit points and intelligence, upgrade your weapons and armor, and understanding large with shady merchants that would fit perfectly into Resident Evil 4.

Customer Ratings and Reviews

The finish is a benefit after the salutation of lower freight pocket. I like the idea of this series, but I damaged liberal. What course it's easy for wizards of the sail b / c that means I need to know more about the elves. As the first series that have interpreted from the War of Souls series Leary makes me want to read more, but at least they brought some hidden behind ... Destiny is the third and final expulsion of the Elven trilogy. Total intelligence that was a virtuoso, but not a big publication. It was a nice study, but in the flesh, I guess the second book (alliances) was the most cleverly of the trilogy. The depict seemed to bore a dollop bit and was almost incessant at points, but the characters were still funny. The intrigue was left with some unstop-ends at the conclusion of the horror story, leaving it launch for credible sequels. I expectancy that the authors fasten to resume the elves’ dispatch, and I will keep my eyes unimpeded for any prosecute up works. I would propound this lyrics to any Dragonlance fans or any flight of fancy fans in habitual.

It’s been unequivocally a while since I’ve waited for a order to appear c rise out like this one, and my expectations were outrageously high-class.I am elated to say that exceeded them....
