More truly "Some Basic Feelings"
The book is quite short and doesn't actually cover "lots" of feelings. The pictures are okay, but some are actually fuzzy and some are a bit of a stretch for the expression of the feelings they are supposed to be portraying (fear, for instance).

The general gist of the book is good - real pictures showing emotions in children. The feelings shown are: happy, sad, grumpy, excited, shy, proud, angry, loving, surprised, frightened, thoughtful, sleepy, serious, silly, curious, and confused. The beginning and end of the book have dozens of feeling words on them and that teased me - I thought they'd be illustrated in the book. THAT would have made this a great book. I guess I was hoping for less "basic" feelings and slightly more expressive pictures in some cases.

My kids (2 and 4) like to read it sometimes- moreso the 2 year old. It's okay. It works to talk about simple feelings but I was hoping for a bit more.
Good starter book to introduce feelings to 2 year old
I bought this book to teach my 2 year old about his feelings. He's alittle young but very observant. He loves to read it and he makes associations with the pictures. Some of the feelings are alittle ambiguous, like "thoughtful". The pictures are accurate for the feeling word. I don't know what kind of chemicals are used in printing, but it really stinks. It smelt so bad that my son was the first one to notice it. The smell is still there after 2 months of use.
Unbelievable!
My 1-yr-old son loves this book so much I really can't believe it! He holds it out to be read and loves the expressive faces of the kids in the book. I also think it helps him understand "how he's feeling" even at his young age. The other day he was a little grouchy and I asked him "are you grumpy?" (which is one of the feelings in the book), and his eyes lit right up! Definitely recommend it- just wish it was a board book!
A Great Book to Teach About Feelings
I bought this book for my son who is 2 1/2 (and was born with Down syndrome) so he can learn about feelings and begin to express himself; to use words like "happy," "sad," or "angry" (instead of cry or scream like a typical toddler).

This book has become his favorite bedtime book and he will not let me read him any other books! And he wants me to read it over and over, or he sits and turns the pages himself.

The photos in this book are priceless, large, and right on target, and there are just a few words per page, perfect for hard to sit still toddlers. I bought him The Feelings Book by Park, but the pictures are cartoonish and not realistic, and he does not like me to read that one.

I was a preschool teacher for nearly 20 years and this would have been a favorite in the classroom! I highly recommend it if you are in early childhood education or a parent, to help teach about feelings in young children so they can begin to express themselves. I also recommend it to parents of special needs children!

Lots To Learn Preschool Videos: Nature

A must have!!!
My son loves this dvd!!! He also has the Lots To Learn Music (which he loves too) so at first he was confused. But he loves both videos. I'm really impressed with the variety of activities, music, and quality of the production. Great tool teaching children all about nature and the things around us. I like to control what my 2 yr. old son watches on tv and Lots To Learn Nature is a dvd must have!
Sesame Street without the puppets
I haven't seen the entire series so I can't speak for other Lots to Learn, Preschool videos. I think this is a fun, varied video that would keep most preschoolers interested though I'm not sure if there's enough educational versus entertainment content. That question is really one of a delicate balance because any video producer doesn't want to make something so dry they loose the kids interest, but I would have liked to have seen more topical focus. Nature is such a broad topic. It seemed like so many topics were included that topical depth suffered making this more of a good one time viewer rather than a video one would watch several times to reinforce concepts. In most regards I liken this video to what's currently on Sesame Street without the puppets, commercialism or subtle political messages. Which is to say I think if PBS offered this or Sesame Street, Sesame Street would probably slowly go off the air.

My only criticism is that this video is really geared toward preschoolers who can already talk and have a fair grasp of nature concepts. I had hoped this might appeal to my child who is just building words and has yet to put two of them together. You really can't tell that about this video until you begin watching. That said, I highly recommend borrowing, renting or checking out a copy from the library for a preview before purchasing.
Best Baby DVD
So far, this product is the best baby DVD. My son Sam,can't get enough of it. In this movie, your kids can learn about shape: circle, rectangle, square and how many sides they have, also color, mix and match, memory game, nature (what rain comes from), animals on the beach and in the ocean. The movie comes with imaginative video & colorful animation. We like the music because it's energetic, fun & comes with educational words like "fish in the ocean, there's lots to learn from around us, ocean mountain", etc; unlike other DVDs that play Old macdonald, etc, those boring songs. The story in this movie are using kid's voice so it capture more attention. And the best part is the exercise with nature, it's exercise shown by a lot of kids, they stretch, go up & down, claps, turn around with the songs. This dvd is actually the best from all of the Lots to learn DVDs.
Sesame Street (Minus the Puppets & Plot)
My kids and I just finished watching this DVD for the second time in a row since it arrived a few minutes ago and it's a hit, for sure. It really does have a sesame street vibe, no puppets or plot here, but this is like all the snippets about counting and kids out having fun, run back to back. The narration is all done by kids and a lot of the songs are sung by kids.

There's a couple of games during the show, what color is this? and under what box is the butterfly? which are done in a Dora style with a moving finger that's like a computer mouse. You even get a little science about clouds and testimonies from kids as to why they like waterfalls. And of course there's the standard fare of counting, alphabet and shapes here.

This DVD is well worth owning. My one year old and four year old alike really like it. With regard to the music, there's no death metal or gangster rap here so don't be concerned.
Catchy video but has one mistake
My 18-month old son loves this video. The scenes and music are entertaining. My major gripe is that it gives the wrong definition of a triangle. It states that a triangle "has three sides that are the same size." That's the definition of an equilateral triangle and not a general triangle. I am surprised that no one has caught this error.

Great DVD Very Impressed
Very impressed and learned a lot. Highly recommend for anyone who wants to learn how fire aparatus is manufactured
Captivating video for all ages
My 3-year old daughter loves firetrucks and is constantly saying she wants to be a fireman. We viewed the "How'd They Build That" video together, and I was amazed at how it captivated her attention with its visually engaging "inside look" for nearly an hour. This is a quality video...well produced...that explains and illustrates the different styles and purposes of several fire fighting vehicles. My daughter especially loved the vehicles in action scenes, and before we had finished watching...my 16-year old son was equally enthralled with the stimulating presentation and fun facts the program delivers. I would recommend this video for a broad age range of viewers. I enjoyed it and learned from it as well. Very pleased!
Fire Apparatus fun
This is a great video for both young and old. Show cases a commonly seen truck, but one alot of people know nothing about. Great profile,, of a company with a long history. Very enjoyable.
Fascinating DVDs!
The How'd They Build That videos are great for kids of all ages. I have several different ones, which I obtained for my[...] nephew. His favorite was the fire truck and garbage truck videos. After seeing them, he wanted to (a) become a fireman and (2) drive a garbage truck. This kept my nephew's attention the whole way - highly recommended!
Review from [...]
This video was fascinating for both children and adults alike in our test group. Viewers are taken on a personal tour of Seagrave Fire Apparatus plant and learn exactly how fire trucks and rescue vehicles are assembled. This plant has been designing, constructing and assembling the toughest trucks for 125 years. They are the very best in the business and you get to see how they do it.

When a customer orders a vehicle, they use computerized 3-D technology, which enables them to see every item on the vehicle before production begins. Amazingly, there are 1800 to 2500 different parts on each vehicle. At Seagrave, many of these parts are still hand-crafted. For this reason, it takes 1500 to 3500 hours to build a single fire truck. No vehicle is allowed to leave the lot without extensive testing to prove its strength, stability and safety.

The plant tour is interspersed with interesting fire engine facts, such as the difference between fire trucks and fire engines. Fire engines, or pumpers, primarily pump water to extinguish fires, while fire trucks carry ladders, tools and specialized fire equipment. This video does a great job of explaining the components of a fire vehicle and exactly how those parts are assembled. It's put together in a fun, informative way, and would make a terrific gift. Did you know there are 125 different colors to choose for a fire vehicle - but 92 of these are variations of red? You would if you had watched this video.

Heaven Looks a Lot Like the Mall

Little, Brown Books for Young Readers

Awesome Book
Heaven Looks A lot like the Mall is a beautifully written realistic fiction novel by Wendy Mass. This book is told in the laugh out loud point of view of an unlikely high schooler named Tessa who is rocketed into heaven. There she meets an unlikely friend and confronts her true self. In "heaven" Tessa looks back on her life, reliving her best and worst memories, which all seem to be to be tied to the mall in some way or another. With the help of the guiding but sarcastic character of nail boy, Tessa just might realize what she is truly here for.
Funny, sweet, and touching
The only author I know who writes in verse is Sonya Sones, but I haven't read anything by her in a long time, so it's interesting to pick up something poetically styled.

When Tessa gets knocked out by a dodge-ball in gym class, she finds herself in Heaven, which looks a lot like her mall. She drifts in and out of the mall, not knowing whether she's dead or in a coma. Nail Boy, who's supposed to be her guide through Mall Heaven, suddenly appears in her reality/coma state and unplugs the oxygen tank. That's when Tessa gets a chance too look at how her life has been since her birth, the things she's done, and the choices she's made.

It's A Christmas Carol kind of topic where the main character is a pretty unlikable person and has done some bad things in the past. And don't forget the Ghost of the Past, who's the one that takes the main character through her early years and lets her see what happened that turned things around. Even though it's not an original storyline, I simply loved it. Who doesn't like revisiting the past and looking at all the wrongs you've made and wishing you could make it all better with a time machine? I think about the time machine practically ten times a day where I try to envision how the "perfect scenario" could have been played out.

I can't say much about the verse because I'm not much of a poetry person, but even I know it flows. It still maintains the essentials of a good book, but more condensed so that nothing is just a "detail" anymore, but a line that connects everything. You still get the Tessa's opinionated voice and a bit of her attitude. If written in novel format, I probably wouldn't have liked at as much as I do now. The character is pretty blunt and straightforward, so it's suitable to match the character with verse.

Although the beginning is kind of awkward, because it seems weird that Tessa actually sees herself getting knocked out by a dodge ball and then floats to Heaven, and it says she doesn't really notice herself. I don't know--that doesn't make sense to me. But, once the book shifts to Tessa's past, it gets so much better. The author does an amazing job of getting the reader to sympathize with the character, and making sure that readers REALLY understand why everything is the way it is. Just like that guy who turned Mr. Scrooge into a good man at the end. You get the gist. Just that this is less elderly, more teenager-y with angst and real-life situations mixed with bad decision-making.

This is divided in three sections: Tessa's elementary school days, middle school, and high school. My favorite section is probably elementary school and middle school. Every chapter--with a store's name, like Sephora, etc.--details why Tessa is the girl she is today, and it's so heartbreaking/incredibly funny to read because of the things she's done in the past. Most people don't remember what they're like as kids, but I'm sure none of us were angels. And that's Tessa. She's lied, she's stolen, she's smoked, and etc. During the entire time I was reading the book, my heart just went out to the girl. She's made so many mistakes, but it's not the kind that makes you say, "God, what a stupid thing to do." It's the kind that makes you say, "I know why you did it. I probably would have done the same thing." Because given the situation, the age, and how you've been raised (with a mother who's constantly criticizing how you look and eat, who wouldn't go nuts with lies and rebellion?) you really would have done it without another thought. That's what makes this book so heartbreaking: sometimes, you wish you could have stuck to your moral thoughts and done the right thing, but most of the time, you end up doing the complete opposite. Not because you're a hateful person, but because it's so hard to be right all the time. The author has really captured Tessa's character. If I put myself in her shoes, there's a 90% chance that I'd react the same way as her. I might not have smoked, but I would've stolen Rick's eggs to get that A, and I would've pretended I didn't know anything when I broke the green crayon. But who knows? Maybe that's exactly what I did back when I was 6, 7, 8 years old.

Wendy Mass is an exceptional YA author. Even if she's not on the bestselling list, all of her novels have been great. She likes to write about things that aren't of the norm, which is so refreshing that you can't help but love and learn from her books. And authors, like actors, should always test themselves with challenges. (First the topic of synesthesia in her debut novel, then her Leap Year plot with multiple POVs, and now, something in verse.) This book took her two years to complete because of the verse, so I'm hoping her next imaginative tale won't take nearly as long.
Heaven - no clouds, no harps, no angels
"Heaven Looks a Lot Like the Mall" is written in verse. The story is told by Tessa, who is in gym class when hit brutally to the head by a dodgeball. She falls into a coma and finds herself in so-called 'heaven', which is very similar to the mall. She's taken back through time and sees past memories of her doing things like stealing and cheating on tests.
This book is absolutely stunning. I love how Mass makes the story humorous and clever while telling stories of Tessa. Teens will definitely enjoy "Heaven Looks a Lot Like the Mall".
a good reality
this book is filled with many stories and life changing experiences of a young girl. when an unexpected twist occurs and tessa falls off a rope in gym class. I thought it was really cool how the author put all these different memories and flashbacks of tessa's life while she was infact in the mall re-living her past. Some of her memories include her first kiss and her very fisrt tank top at abercrombie. i loved this book and recommend itfor anyone who could go for a good laugh.
Great book
Wendy Mass is an amazing author, and this book is yet another piece of evidence to prove this. I love the way this book was able to capture little stories, like little pieces of life, and put them into every-day objects. These objects were then analyzed in the book to find out the true story behind each seamingly worthless object. A very well written, compelling read. Two thumbs up!
