RelaxBonjour, I am a 10 year old. Junie Is funny and Id love to hang out with her. She is talking like a person my age but so what. Every one needs a little zest she is not cinderella, hey park this should be a tv show. Stop writing bad reviews everyone should be a little Junie b. B. Why did you stop Park keep going good job!
All the things you don't want your Kindergarter to model...
I picked this box set thinking it would be a great way to introduce my soon to be Kindergartener to small chapter books. Like other parents I found myself editing out words like "hate, stupid" etc. Far too many times. Then there are the things that she does in the book that surely wouldn't want my daughter to attempt. Like hiding in the classroom closet, falls asleep and is alone there after school is over...
I understand they are for entertainment and not meant to be taken seriously so I am thinking these books MIGHT be ok for an older child who "knows better". If your child is younger like mine I would steer clear for a few years.
There are better kids' books out there.
After comparing an excerpt from "Junie B. Jones and a Little Monkey Business" [...] with an excerpt from "The Great Gilly Hopkins" [...] I noticed one huge difference:
In "The Great Gilly Hopkins," even though Gilly speaks and thinks in slang and with grammatical shortcuts, the surrounding writing is largely grammatically correct.
This way, the reader can both get into Gilly's mind and character and also learn good grammar.
In contrast, in "Junie B. Jones..." there are comparatively few grammatically correct sentences. Even descriptive sentences are written in Junie's poor grammar, including many sentence fragments starting with "and" : "The baby pajamas were very weensy. And the baby socks wouldn't even fit on my big piggie toe." This could easily be two more or less correct sentences if the second "and" were removed.
The dialogue is pretty clever by itself. I agree with reviewers who say that the intervening bad grammar is affected and unnecessary.
Not for kids if you want to teach them morals.
Boy, reading through the reviews it is easy to tell which parents have the kids that misbehave and which parents do not.
The grandparents bought this set for my three year old and five year old. The five year old is pretty much bored with the Dick and Jane books and wanted to try a book with a storyline. The three year loves to be read to. Like any good parent, I read through the books first and ended up throwing the set away. The first two books are complete trash. You cannot teach your children good behavior by making light of and actually encouraging bad behavior.
One reviewer stated these books get you to read with your children and that is the point spending time with your children. To me that is like saying you helped your child with their math homework, sure they got every answer wrong, but the important thing is helping your child with math.
With so many good books out there for children like Boxcar Children Series, anything ever written by Beverly Cleary (Henry Huggins, Ramona, Ralph S. Mouse series), Betsy, Rosco Rules, even the Magic Treehouse series, I do not understand why a parent would subject their children to a horrible series of books like Junie B. Jones.
Dear one-star reviewers: Congratulations on missing the point!
Um. People? Here's the thing about Junie B. Jones:
She's supposed to be a little kid.
She's not a generic little Anykid, no. She probably doesn't talk exactly the same way that your particular six-year-old does, just the same way that your six-year-old doesn't talk the same way as every other kid in their class. She's also a funny, headstrong, hyperactive little kid who's impulsive and sometimes rude. If you want to tell me you've never met a little kid like that, that's fine, but I'm not going to believe you.
The point: Barbara Park decided to write about a kid who acts out sometimes and isn't a model of proper behavior. If that offends you so much that you have to throw the books out and leave one-star reviews of them on Amazon, I trust you'll go do the same for The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and a wide variety of other children's classics featuring mischievous child protagonists.
A note on her grammar, by the way: an interesting thing to note is that in learning grammar, kids go through a few stages. When they're first learning irregular verbs and so on, they conjugate them properly; at this stage, they'll say "ran" for the past tense of "run", "brought" for "bring", etc. Then, as they come to understand the language better, they actually start conjugating them incorrectly. This is where "runned" and "bringed" come in. The reason is that they're coming to understand the rules of language: they're internalizing the rules and making sense of them, so they start adding "-ed" to verbs to make them past tense and so on. After that, they learn what the irregular verbs are all over again and start using them again. But the thing about the way that Junie talks is that it's authentic for a kid who's still at that stage of learning the rules. And while you may say that a kid her age should be past that learning-the-rules stage, here's the thing: that's what all the books are about. She's not just in the middle stage of learning the rules of grammar; she's also in the middle stage of learning the rules of how to behave. She acts and talks in ways that make sense to her, and a lot of the time she's way off target. That's why the books feel authentic, and why they're funny.
She's stubborn and headstrong and self-centered, sure. She's also five. Or six, depending on what book you're on. If you don't want your kids to know that there are little kids who act that way, go buy a copy of Pollyanna for them -- and then homeschool them and keep them away from other kids at all costs, so they don't find out for themselves.

Junie B., First Grader: Aloha-ha-ha! By Barbara Park
Junie B., First Grader: Aloha-ha-ha! was a great book. I really think that you should read it. Junie B. can do some really crazy and really funny things. All Junie B. Jones books are funny, but this time Junie B. goes to Hawaii and all sort off cool things. Read this book to see what crazy and funny things Junie B. will do this time!
Beware: Not useable with Kindle Text To Speech Function
For whatever reason, this book and all of the Junie B. Books cannot be used with the Kindle Text to Speech function. Amazon should advise customers of this - as I would not have purchased these books.
A Hilarious book!
When I went to Hawaii I read this book. It shows pictures Junie B. took along the way. They are very funny. If your looking for a funny book this is the one for you!

Great begginner books!!I ordered this box set for my daughters 8th bday. She was so happy to get them. She loves these books and I must say they definately keep her interest. The price was very good, as I have looked at the box sets at a bookstore and they are usually around $20 for the 4 book set. I paid around $14 and got free shipping so it was definately a great deal. the books are normally around $4-5 depending if you go to a Walmart or a bookstore.
Junie B Jones
My daughter absolutely loves these books! She thinks Junie B Jones is sooo funny! Thank you!
Geat books even for a grammar hound
My 5-year-old son and I love these books. We read them together and laugh out loud. I am a grammar nut. At first, it kind of bugged me that the books were full of grammatical errors, and I would correct them as I went so my son heard correct grammar. I kept reading them, however, because the stories were so funny and my son was so engaged with the story, which is critically important for developing a love of reading. Now we approach the bad grammar and bad behavior differently. I read it as it is written and then tell my son the correct way to say it. I sometimes point out bad behavior in the story. Now, it is part of the fun. I will read "I runned to Room Nine," and my son will yell out "Ran!" Junie B. will do something rude, and he will say "Oh, Junie B., don't do that." In this way we enjoy the stories, he learns how to say things correctly, and it's good all around. Yes, reading and hearing bad grammar will teach bad grammar, and reading and hearing good grammar will teach good grammar, so it's important to be vigilant. Don't let it lead to the loss of otherwise good experiences, though. Rather, work around it. Am I going to take my kid out of school because most teachers don't know how to use the words "lie" and "lay" correctly? Will I not let my son play with his friends because they say "My mom gave these to Bill and I" and other things that burn my ears? Of course not, because the other aspects of the experience are great. The same holds for these books. As for behavior, reading about bad behavior does not produce bad behavior in the reader. That's the argument of the book banners. "That book about drug use or teen pregnancy is going to make kids take drugs or get pregnant." Baloney. There is no support for that argument. So, please, don't deprive your kids of these books. They are so fun. Kids love them; it's parents who are uptight.
Junie B. Jones such a terrific series of books!
The Junie B. Jones books are truly a delight to read. We as readers get to see her start out as a kindergartner, and then graduate to first grade. From the first word in the first book, Junie B. and Barbara Park get you hooked on such a wonderful piece of childrens literature.
She uses words that are funny to describe people and to explain things around her.It is also hilariously entertaining to hear Junie call her best friend "That Grace" and her kindergarten teacher "Mrs."; even though she has a last name, but Junie doesn't remember.
The Junie B.Jones books are such a delightful romp that they will get kids to find enjoyment in reading, and will make them want to pick up other fantastic books and series, and to stray-away from electronics and t.v. which can be very addicting and accessed easily for children...that is very important for me, because I want kids to find enjoyment of reading as I did when I was a kid, and still love reading today. Junie B. Jones is a series of books to easily do that.
Barbara Park is such a terrific writer, that her books will have an everlasting impact on childrens literature now, and for years-to-come.
Rude language, bad grammerand an obnoxious heroine
As the mother of a 5 year old, I was hoping that Junie B. would be a good read since its main character is a kindergartner/first-grader. BUT, I was hugely disappointed. Barbara Park tries very, very hard to emulate Beverley Cleary in creating a rambunctious, not-so-polite youngster who other children can relate to. However, unlike Cleary's Ramona Quimby, Junie B. is a just plain rude. These books include sentences like "I think Grampa's a sucker", "He got hit right in the kisser", "Carnivals are rip-offs". While I realize that we are no longer raising our children in the 1960s/70s when Cleary published, good manners never go out of style. And what bothers me the most, is then when using this language, none of the adults in the book reprimand Junie B., demonstrating that this language is not acceptable. While its not as bad as cursing or using foul language, its still not the kind of language I expect from a kindergartner/first-grader.
And then there is the grammar. Words like "bestest", "funnest" and phrases like "except for not", etc. are really really annoying. Children may speak like this but we consisently correct so why would we read them this stuff? I appreciate that Park is trying to get children to relate but not all children speak like this and it just introduces bad habits to those who don't and reinforces improper speech in those who do.
Overall, this is not a book I find helpful, enjoyable or appropriate and given the many other options in children's literature, I would not recommend reading any of the books in this series.

The Worse Series EverMy husband purchased this book for our daughter for Valentine's Day and mailed it to her because he is out of town. My daughter took one look at the cover and said "I do not like these books - they use ugly words." I looked inside to see that Junie likes to call people dumb among other things. After working with juvenile delinquents for a number of years it is clear that books like these are the start of that negative and abusive behavior in children. I would not even recommend this for an eight-eleven year old let alone 5-8. Avoid like the plague!!
Appalling.
This book and several other Junie B. Jones books were given to my daughter by a family member. I was appalled by the abuse of the English language. Fans of these books say that "Kids are going to talk that way anyway, so it's just realistic." If you want to dumb your kid down to join the legions of morons, then by all means, purchase these books, and you will be well on your way to achieving your goal. If a 10-year old wants to read The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, with its linguistic non-conformities, I have no objection. When you write books for early readers, however, you do a great disservice by teaching them to abuse the language they are just beginning to learn. Grammar and spelling aside, I found nothing particularly interesting or imaginative about these books. The main character also behaves in ways which fans call `realistic', but good parents would hate to see their children imitating. I would never support banning them, but as a parent, I am hoping that my children will look elsewhere for books for early readers.
Junie B Jones is a funny girl...
I have read this book a bunch of times to my children. They absolutely love these books! I have to say I like them myself even though there has been a few times I wasn't so happy with my children. One of my girls decided that she was going to cut her hair because Junie did in one of her books. Well, we don't do that in our house so that didn't go over to well.
Otherwise these books are great! You can't help but laugh at her tactics. She is a fun character every child can enjoy!
I highly recommend this book!

Terrible Series
I can't imagine more inappropriate reading for a 5-8 year old. These books are loaded with poor grammar, individual words that are too advanced and, on top of that, they encourage bad behavior. Avoid this series.
My Tooth reviws
It was very funny. She was the first one to lose a tooth in her class.

Appalling BooksHow can any publisher publish stories that promote such lousy grammar? The intended readers are impressionable: at a fragile age where they are still trying to master correct verb tenses and other important vocabulary skills. If this series is intended to create future readers, no wonder our country is in such educational trouble. In sum, these books are an affront to parents, teachers, and their young readers. And by the way, the stories also promote questionable attitudes and behavior. Totally irresponsible.
Love that Junie B!
My seven year old son loves these and so do my husband and I.
We read every night and these books never fail to cause us to laugh out loud.
He loves them so much he brings them home from school for reading homework.
Appalling.

Great Books!
I bought these for my niece for Christmas - she could not wait to get started reading!
Overall a bad choice for your child
Some of the storylines are half-acceptable if you can get past the barrage of bad grammar and poorly formed sentences. For the life of me I do not understand why someone would write children's stories that use bad grammar and teach improper English. What is the point of that? Do 6-9 yr old kids speak this way? No, they do not, or at least they should be taught not to. Not to mention the behavior that is being taught... Does the author speak this way? Does her children speak and behave this way? I hope not. I feel sorry for the parents who think these are nice books and that they describe acceptable behavior.
Please do yourself (and your child) a big favor and look elsewhere for prose. There are countless wonderful books out there. Good luck.

Sponsor: Basically, she took a couple of plots from different books and kind of wove them together. She wrote new lines for Junie B. Anytime there was a border she wasn't sure about, I'd "Junie" it up.
Q: Did you have veto power if it didn't work?
A: We did have that (first) meeting. Anytime you say to anybody, "I really don't impecuniousness a lot of new dialogue," they have to figure out if that's going to leave them much room. But it wasn't difficult at all. I have a Junie bible in my head of what she says and what she doesn't say.
Q: So you had lever?
A: In other words, she didn't get carte blanche. The reason I'm a stickler about it . . . is the consistency. When the child comes to the theater, all the lines, the characters and the cadences are au courant to them.
Q: Junie is such a popular character. Why no movies or TV shows?
A: I turn down everything except plays. I haven't been interested in movies and TV. Mostly, it's just way too much exertion for me (laughing). I have a whole other life that goes on, and I just can't turn this over to somebody. I know myself, and I know the level of involvement I'd have to have. I like to keep my business work and my private life really normal.

Your doctor, he gives her a creepy weird sort of album to use during his slip of the tongue, a roll of photos. As Junie B., Dolores (the hula Barbie), and Phillip Johnny Bob (the elephant), heading to the islands, Junie B. realizes that go for the best picture of your day could be more difficult than meditation. His first attempt on the plane ends with the peculiar ladies sitting around her.Their next cover swim too humble jingle that had to have, which is now attached to the waist. I'm a fan of Junie B. Mammoth, from my first get into college.Every year, I pore over my actions as a series after quiet breathing-spell for the measure. Children in kindergarten and first grade have loved like Junie B. and madness! Aloha Ha Ha not stood out. Photos of Junie B. and your thoughts on Hang Around are honorable too weird for words. I surprisingly enjoyed a normal visit, how can I deal with two of Junie B. and those who sat around him. Compared with the balance of the series, this is not one of my top three, but I decline to see Junie B. outside their unwritten configuration. A feeling I will say about the Junie B.series as a whole is that his speech and behavior can sometimes be clearly on top. In reading my rank, often sensor which tells, even check borrow up to adults.
