Something old, something new...I disagree with the previous reviewer about this video having no interest or value - I enjoyed the two James Marshall presentations very much; they are certainly on par with other Scholastic Video releases, with good music, good animation and faithful representations of the original Grimm stories. I also showed "The Elves and the Shoemaker" to a class of Kindergarten-age students yesterday, and they were entertained, and said that they all liked the story, even though the animation is only intermittent. The final two stories on the DVD, "The Three Billy Goats Gruff" and "The Fisherman and his Wife" are both twenty-to-thirty years older, and have far less entertainment value, and seem a strange match with the other films here, being stylistically and artistically much more primitive. So three good stories, two not-so-good; three out of five stars.
Drivel
Shockingly bad. Over-animated, jumpy, too much colloquial speech, cartoonish artwork. In short, the total opposite of everything that makes most of the Scholastic Storybook DVDs so incredibly wonderful.
I have purchased 30 of the Scholastic Storybook DVDs from Amazon (the 27 DVD bundle is a steal), and we borrow the rest from Netflix. We watch them with our 3 year old, and we own many of the books covered by the DVDs. I suppose I am spoiled, because the vast majority of the Scholastic Storybook DVDs are WONDERFUL. They are beautiful, educational, and entertaining.
If you like children's TV, you might like this DVD. But if you seek out Scholastic Storybook DVDs for their literary quality, their beautiful artwork, their fantastic narration, etc., then just skip this DVD. It's drivel.

Stories for a Stormy Night: Volume I: Featuring Two Novellas: Fear-o-Lots & A Sickness by Any Other Name

Customer Reviews
A Must ReadIn The Fear-O-Lots there are three knights in the Circle of Exalted Knights that are afraid of everything. Their only wish is to never be called for a mission by King Kindly. One day King Kindly does call Scaredy Pants, Yellow Belly and Shadow Boxer to do a mission for him.
The trio set out on a mission to help a young boy. Along the way the trio run into many problems, but they find that working together as a team helps them. Can The Fear-O-Lots do as the king asks and complete their mission? This is a wonderfully charming story of how working together and talking things out can make a hero out of anyone even The Fear-O-Lots.
In A Sickness By Any Other Name you will meet Lenny and Vicki. Each one has their own demons to content with. When the two meet they find working together can help both of them with their problems.
In Stories For A Stormy Night, Mario S. Fedele has written two great stories to read on a dark night curled up on the sofa with hot chocolate and a blanket to cover your head at times. I highly recommend this book as a great read. I look forward to reading more of this authors work.
author of DEADLY REVENGE abd SAVANNAH
In Stories for a Stormy Night, Vol.1, there are two terrific stories. The first story, The Fear-O-Lots is an adventure story about an unlikely heroic threesome who set out on a quest for the king. They overcome all odds to save a twelve year old boy.
The second story in the book is called A Sickness by any Other Name. It is a story that will capture your attention from the beginning. This is where Mario S. Fedeles talent as a writer really shines. Even more so than the first story, this one is full of surprises. When Vicky and Lenny meet no one knows what deep dark secrets they are both trying to conceal. The ending will surprise you and make you think long and hard the next time you go out.
I recommend Stories for a Stormy Night, Vol.1.

Fabulous! This CD makes me smile everytime I listen to it. A great find :)
Absolutely wonderful!
This is the CD we play all the time in our house, which is home to a nine-year-old girl and five- and three-year-old boys. The blend of music and poetry is just amazing, and keeps all of us (including Mommy) interested over and over again. Of course, we all love different things about it, but we agree on our favorite song: Mr. Bear! Buy this if you want a gentle, intellectual AND fun CD for your library. You will never regret it.
NOT classic Bill Crofut
If you really love folk music, you'll love Bill Crofut; but not this album! I grew up listening to Bill Crofut (my parents' old record is all scratched up from me dancing around in front of the record player to the Chipmunk's Day). I love his voice, I love his poetry, I love the way he plays the banjo. I was so excited to see this album now that I have a child myself. But from the moment I turned it on, I loathed it. It's too operatic (I like Opera, but not when I want to listen to folk music), and it makes the very real and down-to-earth songs sound high-faluten and just plin bad. If your're looking for some great music for your kids (even very young ones), get some Bill Crofut music...but get it with Bill singing, not these non-folk singers.
Innovative mix of folk, classical, poetry
I love what these performers have done mixing Shakespeare with folk,
classical etc. It is an especially big hit with my four year old. Kids
are much more receptive to this stuff than people give them credit
for...it's good to expose them early, when they are so open and
unhibited about the joys of music and language. Nevertheless I think
there are some valid criticisms from the other reviewers. Some songs are
more successful than others. It is hard to hear the spoken poetry (we
turn it up LOUD and then it is clear as a bell), maybe it wasn't "mixed"
properly. WE actually found that it appealed to us more and more with
repeated listenings, unlike the last reviewer (to each, his or her own).
My four year old especially loves the chipmunk song. My two year old
also loves the "Dance to your daddy" old celtic style nursery songs. The
ALleluia lullabye/carol is gorgeous (you can hear another version on the
beautiful Celtic Lullaby album). I love the selections of Shakespeare,
which stand well on their own out of context of the play and give
children an early chance to hear such lovely phrases as "we are such
stuff as dreams are made on." So I give it a four for doing all of this,
if not 100% successful, it still is pretty darn good and I hope it is
the first of many such efforts.
