Sturdy is an understatementI accidentally dropped one of the receivers off a 3 story balcony onto a concrete patio. I retrieved it totally unharmed.
Also, I was surprised to hear the sounds in the room from that distance as clearly as any room in our apartment.
Four Years Plus
After seeing some other reviews of this monitor, I'm going to guess that we lucked out, or that these are hit and miss. As I posted in a comment to one reviewer, we've been using this monitor for over four years and only now are we looking to replace one of the batteries (looks like we'll have to put our trust in an unknown-to-me battery super-store website for that).
It's been a great product for us. We've taken the base and two receivers on several vacations, plus used them daily at home. A typical day has been to take a receiver off its charger when our (son, and then daughter) goes to bed, and put the other receiver on the charger. Then swap them the next day, and so on.
Of the many gifts we received from the baby shower for our first, this is among the ones that has gotten the most use. We've been very happy with it.
LOVE STATIC? Buy this monitor!
This monitor had so much static no matter what channel it was on. We bought a Fisher Price monitor 4 years ago and absolutely loved it! After getting dropped for the billionth time and being on non-stop for four years, the base unit stopped working and we went for a replacement. This was not even close in quality and performance! When the sound is turned down low enough that the static isn't aggravating, you can't hear the baby. We're returning it as soon as we can find a replacement.
great monitor
This a great monitor, I have been using it for close to 4 years now and I am getting ready to purchase a 2nd set for our new baby. I leave one plugged in next to bed at all times and have never had a problem (it still works on battery power as well). The range is quite long, you can go pretty far outside and it still works great, the only noise we get from them is from the white noise machine or humidifier we keep in her bedroom. I was happy to see I could still purchase this for this time around since our kids sleep upstairs and we sleep down we need to have a monitor longer.
The volume nob breaks
I have 2 of these monitors & both of them the volume nob has broken after 5 months. So you cant turn the volume up or down.

Worked once, then the receiver/handset diedWe got this as a baby shower gift, and we opened it up before the baby was born. All was well the first time I tested the base and the handset unit when plugged into the wall, so I discarded the packaging.
After the baby was born a month later, however, I tried to put three AAA batteries (not included) into the back of the handset unit to use it. It stopped working--both the AC and DC power sources. I tried taking the batteries out, but it didn't work even when plugged into the wall outlet.
I called Amazon to tell them it was defective, and they said that I couldn't replace the unit because it was no longer available. Instead, they "refunded" me only $34.91 of an $89.95 + tax unit with a gift card. I feel bad for the person who bought this for us at our shower, because they just threw money away. And we're still without a working baby monitor. It's too bad the unit was defective in the first place, and it's really shameful customer service on the part of Amazon.com.
My advice is to shop around! My sister loaned us a Summer Infant, Inc. monitor that has been working well--and it's at least 3, maybe even 6 years old.
I'm underwhelmed
I have a complicated house with big stone walls blocking off rooms from each other, so I need audio monitors with good long-range capabilities. I struck out with the Graco Vibe iMonitor, which claims a 2000-ft range, and so I tried this one instead. I can't go from one corner of the house to the other, so instead I have to leave the receiver in one room and turn the volume up pretty high so I can hear it from the rest of the house. With the volume up any appreciable amount, there is a lot of humming and background white noise, that sounds like the fan on my laptop running. So although I am able to listen in on the nursery, I also have to listen to a lot of noise that isn't really there. I just bought the Summer Infant Day & Night video monitor, which also operates at 900 Mhz, and I am amazed at how crisp and low-noise its audio is compared to this Fisher-Price unit. Also, I'm not entirely sure how the red indicator lights work on this receiver, since my baby can be crying his head off and only one LED lights up.
The product didn't cost a whole lot so I'm not too upset about buying it, but I would not recommend the product to any other parents. For audio only, I am much more impressed with the Sony line of monitors and will stick with them from now on.
Does not recharge itself Takes 3 AAA batteries to work cordless
I am pregnant with my second child and received these monitors as a gift. I hooked them up in my 3 year olds room to use them for a while to be sure they worked fine and they seem to work great. No static or interference but i just realized unlike my other set of Fisher price Monitors i have used for the last 3 years for my daughter they do not recharge themselves they take 3 AAA batteries in order to use them cordless. My first set charged when plugged in with a built in battery. I unplugged these yesterday while daughter was napping and tried to go outside with it and it wouldn't work to my suprise it has been plugged in for about a week. I had full intention to return it until i looked at it and it looked like back came off and well it does and there is a spot for batteries. If you don't plan on using it unplugged very often i would recommend it but i use mine unplugged alot so i dont like it too much thats just more batteries i will have to buy.
Probably the best value currently available
There is nothing wrong with this monitor and it is probably one of the best values available today. Some things to note regarding this monitor:
* The transmitter (baby unit) does not accept batteries. This fact negates the complaints made about the parent unit not automatically switching to battery power in the event of a power failure because even if it did the baby unit will not transmit. Unless the complaint was trying to express a desire for the parent unit to make a lot of static noise to alert you that there was a power failure.
* The batteries are not easily changed in the parent unit - requires a phillips head screwdriver. Most parents should be familiar with this as any child toy that requires a battery will have the battery housing screwed shut.
* The parent unit does not charge the batteries when not in use. You can use rechargeable batteries, but you will have to remove them to charge them in your own charging unit.
* This unit operates at 900 MHz - so if you have an older cordless phone operating at 900MHz as well you may get excess noise - this is not a product defect, just the reality of using multiple items on the same frequency. Also, do not automatically assume that a 2.4GHz model will work better as most home wireless routers and wireless access points operate at 2.4GHz as well as many of the new cordless phones. You need to assess your wireless environment to best determine the product transmit frequency you need or be willing to move the monitor or transmitter around until you find something that works.
If you want a monitor with rechargeable batteries in the parent unit expect to pay about $30 more for the product. A couple of options to consider are the Fisher-Price Private Connection Monitor Fisher-Price Private Connection Monitor in White and the First Years Crisp & Clear Monitor Crisp & Clear Plus Rechargeable 900MHz Monitor.
Last, from reading reviews of this and other monitors it appears the dual function on/off volume controls are prone to fail and cannot be repaired. This is most unfortunate as it gets a fair amount of use.
Handset defective, received prompt replacement
The handset for the monitor stopped working after one day (it stopped turning on), but we received a replacement handset in about a week after contacting the manufacturer. The new handset has been working great- this is a good basic monitor at a good price.

Love It (But Agree About Battery)I love this item. I keep it plugged in next to the bed, so I don't really use the battery too much, but I agree that it's a problem with the monitor. (The only problem, I would say.) My battery only lasts 30-45 minutes if the unit is unplugged.
That aside, I love this monitor. I can see whether or not it's worth going upstairs when my daughter makes noise and when she wakes up in the morning or from naptime, I can start soothing music from my receiver to her transmitter. It definitely helps ease the wake-up period.
Great at first, but quickly deteriorates in quality
We picked this specific monitor because of the brand and it was one of the more expensive ones at the store but still not breaking the bank (we've been burnt before by trying to save and pick the cheapest item...learning the hard way that you get what you pay for). Great looking product with awesome features, but within about 3-4 months the product started to deteriorate. First the picture began flickering...next thing you know the picture began freezing. With that came the audio not working periodically. The monitor receiver would be on the night table next to my wife, and I would hear the baby cry through the hallway without the monitor picking it up! It works periodically, but should be more dependable...for atleast the 1st year! I thought that maybe it was just mine, but after researching other reviews, learned it is a problem with the product.
Unless you get it second hand, I do not recommend this product.
No Battery Life; No charge; Disfunctioning Piece of Garbage!
But let me tell you how I really feel:
I have purchased several batteries not a single one have held a charge. I have taped the cord onto the monitor in the hopes of creating a more stable connection. Alas, I am still awakened in the middle of the night with the lovely sounds of BLEEEEP!!! BLEEEEEP!!! BLEEEEEP!!! BLEEEEP!!!! "LOW BATTERY" is what it is trying to tell you - I am NOT deaf thank you very much! I am awakened enough times by the baby in the middle of the night without an additional noise in my ear to awaken me! I swear I jumped clear to the ceiling! I can hear that $%%&* sound from two floors away on the other side of the house!!! Why would it need to be THAT loud - please tell me? DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT! THE COMPANY DOES NOT HELP YOU. IT IS A MANUFACTURING ISSUE THAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN RECOGNIZED IN THE TESTING PHASE!! Quickly - navigate away from this product advertisement - go to another product, any product has to be better than this one. Run while you still have $150 in your pocket! Run, I tell you!
Better ones out there...
I have used this monitor since day 1 with our now 7 month old son and would steer you towards other devices. The battery life on the handheld monitor is TERRIBLE, lasting at most 20 minutes. I have a feeling that is because you can not turn off the video portion of the monitor if you only want the audio portion like most of the monitors out there. The video at night illuminates our room and makes it hard to have as dark as we wish. We actually turn it over on its face so it doesn't shine at night, but we can still hear little one if he cries. Actually viewing the monitor and hearing the baby is not an issue at all. The lullaby feature is nice and has worked once or twice when I've tried to soothe him from afar.
most of my friends are using the summertime brand and highly rec'd it. I am actually considering replacing this one with a summertime monitor since we'll use this for many more months and with the next baby too.
So, all in all, DON'T waste your money...go with something a little better for a little more money. It's worth it.
Poor battery life + poorly connected AC Adapter=Annoying low battery beep that wakes up my baby from downstairs!
I really wanted to like this monitor for the remote music features, color video, etc. and it IS good for all of that. As all of the other reviews state, the battery life is a huge issue. I feel that Fisher Price should not advertise this as a portable monitor. It needs to be plugged in at all times. If you don't plug it in, the charge lasts maybe a minute or two before this loud, annoying warning beep starts in. It is so loud, it has disturbed my baby from a floor away. Another big issue is that the shape of the monitor where the power cord plugs in is contoured to the point where the A/C adapter doesn't fit squarely on, so you have to constantly ensure the unit is really plugged in. I am going to try to buy additional power cords at Radio Shack so that when I move the monitor around between floors of my home, I don't have to keep moving the power cords.

Horrible staticI had a Sound N Lights monitor with my first child six years ago and it was great, except when I tried to get it to work with this baby. I was not upset about the old one not working because we definitely got our money's worth from it. I decided since I liked the first one so much that I would purchase the updated version. It is HORRIBLE!!!! There is constant static and the lights are all lit up when the baby is silent. I valued those lights the last time because I kept the monitor turned down so I didn't hear every noise, but could see if the baby was crying. Don't waste your money! I did not keep the box for this one because I trusted that it was going to be a good product. Now I am stuck with it and will have to spend more money to purchase a different monitor.
Don't buy this!!
We had received the older version of this monitor 3 years ago and liked it very much. When we became pregnant again I decided we would get another one. Well they changed the design, which I thought could only make it better, and now it's awful! I'm upset that I did not keep the box and gift receipt bc Target won't take it back and I really don't have $$ to spend on another one. SERIOUSLY this one is useless though.
blah
not good. The batterry on one never worked. The battery on the other one worked for about 2 mos. Lots of static. Just seem to be very cheap.
This monitor sucks
This monitor sucks. I have used it for 3 weeks and its already driving me crazy. Dont waste your money. The interference is awfull.
Right now Im looking for a new one.
GARBAGE, and I'll tell you why...
THE GOOD: base monitor has a night light that my kids like to play with. It comes with two receivers. The cord for the base is pretty long.
THE BAD: Always has a low level of static. Can only hear my kids when they scream loud. When they talk at a normal volume the monitor doesn't pick it up well.
When we turn up the volume on the receiver (so we can hear the kids) we can also hear local AM radio (bad).
BOTTOM LINE: DO NOT BUY.
We loved the first version of the Fisher-Price monitor which is no longer sold anymore. With the old monitor, we could hear the kids whisper and ever hear them breathing with minimal static.
This new monitor is terrible.
I can only hear the kids if they scream.
Anytime a truck or motorcycle drives down the street, the monitors pick up on the vibrations and amplify them so you get a loud static rumble.
I wish I had done more research on Amazon before I bought these.

worthless junkThis monitor worked reasonably well for the first few weeks, but ever since then it has been essentially worthless. We almost never get a signal any more - we just hear static. Sometimes switching channels (there are two) and/or turning the unit on and off will make the unit work for a few seconds. When we do manage to get a signal it is still overloaded with static and, if we move the receiver or walk in front of it, prone to interference. The receiver is typically located about fifteen feet away from our baby's room, in a straight line and with only one closed door between the receiver and the monitor, so distance and obstructions are not factors. We've also tried changing the batteries and have not noticed any improvement.
I wish I had looked at the Amazon ratings before we bought this. It is a piece of garbage and has deterred me from buying anything from Fisher Price ever again.
love it!
This monitor has been wonderful for us! As long as you take the time to read and follow the set-up instructions, do the testing, and find the proper channel for your location it works like a dream. I can take it all over my very large yard and never anything but perfectly clear reception. I would highly recommend it to anyone. Especially if you have lots of computer and electronic devices as we do. Never any interference! Only drawback is the battery life. it runs them down quickly, but worth living with that for the overall great performance. Been using it for a year and a half and would absolutely buy again
The Worst Monitor Ever
I bought this today to replace a monitor I had that suddenly stopped working after 3 years. This monitor has 2 channels and neither works. All you will hear is a lot of static. OK, not true, you will also hear music that is not playing in your house or TV that your neighbors are watching. What you won't hear is your child above all that noise. This is being returned first thing in the morning.
El Cheapo
We have the really nice Angelcare monitor at home with motion sensor (which freaking rules, BTW) but I didn't want to travel with the nice one. So we went out and bought this el cheapo Fisher Price baby monitor as a cheap traveling monitor. Wow does it suck. You really do get what you pay for with this one.
Pros:
- Nightlight feature is a neat idea... (see cons)
- The sound-o-meter lights at the top can be seen from both sides of the receiver, which is kinda neat.
- the green power light on the receiver is crazy bright, if your eyes are adjusted to the dark you can almost see to walk
- I can hear my screaming toddler just fine, plenty loud and all that.
Cons:
- nightlight is not as bright as a normal nightlight, it's really dim so it's not as useful as it could be.
- the green power light on the receiver is crazy bright, point it away from your sleeping face.
- very static-y and buzzy. Sounds like a UFO is hovering on my nightstand. (Yes I've tried both A and B channels.)
- power cord for receiver *refuses* to stay plugged into receiver properly. I have to set it just right and very gently let go for it to work.
- tried batteries, which worked, but they didn't last long. could be a common thing but I could swear my Angelcare's batteries last longer.
- sound quality/clarity isn't as good as my Angelcare. With my Angelcare I could hear the tiny whisper of her breathing when she was a newborn.
Bottom-line... if you just need an el cheapo monitor to get you by for a while, or use it for travel, then it's tolerable. And if you leave it at a relative's by mistake, or if it breaks, you won't be too heartbroken. I really don't recommend using it full-time though, not by a long shot! I'm going to go post a review for my Angelcare monitor next, if you want to know more about that one.
Terrible Static!
I bought this because of the good price. However, I had to return it (save the packaging until you try it out). It was completely unuseable. The static was so loud that it would have kept me up at night. I tried the two different settings and they both had way too much static.

Government recalls 2.1 million cribs after reports of baby deaths
More than 2.1 million fall-side cribs by Stork Craft Manufacturing are being recalled, the biggest crib recall in U.S history, following reports of four infant suffocations.
The Consumer Offshoot Safety Commission said late Monday the recall involves 1.2 million cribs in the Concerted States and almost 1 million in Canada, where Stork Craft is based. Sales of the cribs being recalled go back to 1993.
Nearly 150,000 of the cribs tote the Fisher-Price logo.
The CPSC said it is aware of four infants who suffocated in the drop-side cribs, which have a side that moves up and down to allow parents to heave up exalt children from the cribs more easily.
Kimberly Pettit, a North Texas mother of five, is frustrated that the government appears to be dragging its feet on a deprecatory safety issue.
Gus Pettit’s room is a place that is supposed to be his safe haven, but the drop-down sides on his crib could be risky.
The CPSC is on record saying the hardware in many cases isn't 'substantial.' That means kids could wiggle their heads between the side towel-rail and headboard, a problem that has already proven deadly.
