TerribleWe can't even tell when our almost 3 year old is in bed, and with the head not being able to pivot like some of the summer monitors, we're stuck looking in one place. it takes forever to initialize the video and the reception is just AWFUL, even less than 100 FT from her room. Skip it.
I found this monitor brand new for $49 today
This monitor is sooo cool, especially for the price. I just found this today at my local Big Lots store for $49, yes, not a typo, less than $50. Brand new in the sealed box, never been opened or returned. I thought it looked like a good deal but had not seen this one before so I did not really know how much they normally sell for. WOW! When I got on the internet to research the price you can bet I was shocked. Just wanted to let everyone know so that they can go to their local Big Lots store to pick one of these up for the same great price. I had no idea that they sold for more than $100. I was thinking that I maybe got like $30 off retail price but was pleased to find out that I got this item for about 1/4 of retail price. Knowing what I know now, I am not so sure that it is worth what I am seeing them sell for on the internet but if you can get one for what I paid for it then you are absolutely getting a good deal!
Another junk baby video monitor
This is the second baby video monitor we tried and are returning.
One of the reasons this unit was purchased was that it said on the box and in the product information text that it offered "Improved resistance to wi-fi interference". The first thing to fall out of the box when I opened it was an extra insert (titled "Common Questions") that says:
"Use of other 2.4GHz products (such as wireless networks, cordless phone, or microwave ovens) may cause interference with this product. To avoid, simply move the child unit and/or parent unit away from the source of the interference or discontinue use of other 2.4GHz products..."
We have a 2.4GHz wi-fi environment in our home that we do not plan to 'discontinue'.
We tried it for a week. The daytime video quality was reasonably sharp and I found the video usable, although the signal dropped frequently, even when we were just downstairs, directly under the bedroom where the camera unit was located. The night vision quality was poor unless the camera was really close to the crib. The mfr. says that it must be placed within 7 feet, but that seems optimistic.
User controls were 'ok', could be improved as others have noted, yet more usable to me then the 'Safety First High Def Digital Video Monitor' we tried before this.
I am returning the unit today because the audio portion of the unit is total garbage.
It has constant static (which also wears down the battery quickly) and the Vox (voice operated) portion of the system is useless. Basically it is always on at whatever volume you set it to, and never very loud even at max. Maybe it is just a bad unit, but there is no apparent Vox capability at all. Furthermore, the sound quality is really horrible. Even when I talked directly and slowly into the mic of the child unit, my wife could barely understand me at the parent unit about twenty feet away downstairs because of such poor signal to noise ratio and sound break-up.
Having now tried two 'top of the line' 'digital' video units, I give up on them. They were both, in my opinion, unusable junk. I think the way to go is to get a top quality audio unit and independently use an IP camera that works with our existing wi-fi system to send video and audio to our phones on demand. Potentially this should provide a way to have baby viewing anywhere we have wi-fi available via our pda phone. We will purchase an audio-only system for normal household use as a monitor. I really did not want to spend the time to set this up, but with only junk available on the video market it seems to be the way.
Manufactures, do you need a product idea?
How about a baby monitor system that does not try to compete with wi-fi, but instead uses it! Make a simple to use IP based viewer device that you can either plug into a wired network or use with 802.11 b,g or n wi-fi. Make it so that you can use 'most any' IP based camera with or without a microphone and have decent battery life by 'listening' for a trigger and then switching on the video or sound output. Make it work with standard rechargeable AA or AAA batteries and existing IP security, such as WEP, WPA2 etc. This device would find more use outside of the 'baby monitor' domain. Purchase options could include viewer software for Windows, MAC, PDA phones via wi-fi or edge network, etc. Since the tech savvy market that would use may be a tad more sophisticated then average, be sure that it is a quality device. Wow would that ever be neat!
Piece of Junk!!!
I do not work for a competitor -- only a concerned parent. While their standard non-video monitor works great, this is a total piece of junk. If you have ANY connectivity in your home, cell phones included, this product fails consistently. The first unit kept cutting out on half the screen so they sent a new one. My 15-month-old daughter is down the hall at a very close range and it cuts out of signal all the time. Then it beeps and keeps you up through the night as it searches for the signal. Total nightmare. The company, who does have exceptional customer service, sent me a replacement. No difference. Unless you plan to camp out next to the door this product is totally useless. Great concept, wish it worked. Sticking to the old non-video product for now.

Monitor - for peace of mindI use this monitor to let me keep an eye on my 87 yr old mother who has moderate dementia. It has a very clear monitor picture, the sound quality is way above average and the convenience of moving from room to room with my part of the monitor is awesome. I keep it in my bedroom at night, take it throughout the rest of the house during the day and even into the back yard when I'm working in my garden. It also eases her mind because she knows she can call to me when she needs me. I can answer her to let her know I'll be there shortly. I have tried several monitors over the past 6 or 7 years but this is the first one that meets all of our needs. I'm truly happy with this monitor.
An Unnessesary Dissapointment
This model has good video quality and good audio quality. It includes battery pack for both pieces which is nice. However there is a terrible oversight that ruins this product in my opinion. The speaker always stays in off mode and comes on only if the sound gets to a certain decibel level. This is highly irritating because I cannot hear the small noises that can also be important. It didn't even pick it up when my daughter was faintly crying! So forget about hearing your child unless they are crying or talking loudly. I'm sure it's just a battery saving feature if they are running on the batteries, but why didn't they make it possible to change the setting on the speaker to full time?!! If I can't hear my infant stirring or if she's sick and possibly vomiting, this is not a safe baby monitor to me. Sure it has video, but who wants to keep their eyes glued to a video receiver? Otherwise it would be a good monitor. Good luck.
Ideal!
Product as described. I bought this monitor to observe my 81 yr old Mother on Hospice. In just one day, this monitor brought me so much peace of mind allowing her to have some time alone, and I was able to be in another room or out in the yard for more time than I have been in a long time. It was such a relief to just look at the monitor and see if she was awake or getting out of bed and instantly hear her call for me because her voice is so weak.
I can turn the visual off and give her her privacy yet hear her when she called me. A really great option.
I can go into another room or go outside and continue to view and hear her. Since she is in the stage where she can't remember to push her Lifelink button anymore, this was the perfect answer, it is voice activated! If she falls, I can hear or see her immediatly, yet she has the feeling of freedom to do what she can still do around the house and I can see if she goes outside and is at a risk for falling. I only wish I would have thought about this 3 years ago when my Father was in Hospice and unable to walk, confined to bed, yet would attempt to get up all night when he didn't know what he was doing. I can now sleep in my room and feel more at ease!
You should really market this item to caregivers, it is wonderful.
Thank you for helping me keep my Mother safe!
Daughter,
Marianne
A baby monitor that I've been looking for
I was searching for a good video baby monitor for weeks. I had an audio-only baby monitor, but it's a pity I could not see the condition of my son, e.g. his sleeping position, whether the blanket is in place, etc. Unfortunately, most video baby monitors are either analog (interference) or without the talk-back feature. My old audio-only monitor is analog and it has quite a bit of interference, but it has a good feature: two-way radio for talking back to the child -- a feature that I feel very important.
This 2.4GHz Digital Wireless Baby Monitor System with Night Vision meets all my expectations, at a very affordable price comparatively. It works immediately out-of-the-box, no interference, clear audio and video, good night vision, and I can talk back to my son. The voice activated alarm and video works pretty well. Only one small complaint: it wakes up from sleep mode and turns on the video/audio for only a brief moment (like 5 seconds) which is too short, it would have been better if the duration is like 30 seconds or configurable; but it's not a big deal - I can always turn off the sleep mode immediately with a touch of a button.
I highly recommend this baby monitor.

Customer Reviews
Well made, but very poor quality connection. We've use this monitor for about 4 months. Receiver was just on the other side of the wall from transmitter (2 feet away). The sound quality is very bad. The static sound is all we hear no matter how low or high the volume is. Also the video is always in and out, never constantly available, always squigly lines. Very disapointed. Will have to spend another $$$$ for another monitor.
Horrible, but at least it didn't work, quickly!
Although we had a MobiCam video monitor, we wanted two things it didn't offer:
1. we wanted a second camera since we were having a second child.
2. we wanted a rechargeable monitor. The Mobi receivers can use batteries, but it won't charge rechargeable batteries with the AC adapter. You have to unscrew the case, remove the batteries, recharge and reinstall. Since the receivers will only last an hour or so with batteries, you are basically limited to only using the receiver plugged into the wall.
The Bebe system sounded appealing. It comes with two cameras and the receiver can plug in to charge included rechargeable batteries.
Although it had two features we really wanted, it simply was unusable. Image quality was horrible. It made a clicking sound randomly throughout the night. Our house is a perfectly average 1960's two-story. Maybe this would work in a 2BR apartment or a small ranch style, but if you actually can benefit from using a wireless monitor, I can't think of any reason you would want this model.
The best thing I can say is that at least it didn't work right out of the box, so that we could take it back without too any problems.
On the right path... but not there yet.
I read all of the poor reviews and some of the complaints were just plain useless. The "clicking" noise as it intervals between cameras isn't intolerable, you don't even notice it after a minute. The button on the side that turns the unit on/off is a scroll wheel and I can't see how anyone with a fully functional hand and half a functioning brain couldn't easily operate it.
The image from both cameras was clear enough for me to see 2 month old twins breathing. Each camera has two BRIGHT green LED lights which was a little annoying but a simple sticker or band-aid covered them right up.
The sound on camera A was great, it was sensitive enough to pick up the clock ticking on the wall. Camera B was another story. I experienced the same static as other people and it was so loud that there was really no way to sleep with Camera B going. I had to settle for just using Camera A and if twin B made noise, I would put the volume all the way down then activate Camera B.
I also started to experience problems with the image after about 2 weeks. I noticed that the receiver was picking up more interference from somewhere and sometimes my own body movements caused interference. Twice I turned on the receiver to find no image even though the cameras were both on. I had to turn everything off and back on for the image to appear on the receiver.
I purchased this thru Target and took it right back for a full refund with no problems.
I love that the receiver used rechargable batteries and you could just unplug it and go.
If they could fix the static/interference issues and improve the quality a bit, they would have a very good product.
Great Video Quality but Lacks in Execution
I have a two year old and a newborn and wanted to use this so I could keep an ear (and an eye) on both during the night. The video quality on this is excellent, even at night. It was very smooth and had good detail. However, the 8-second scan feature, essential for monitoring both kids at night, was really annoying. When the monitor switched between channels there was a loud static crunch sound, like on a walkie-talkie. It was better if the sound was on the lowest settings but then I couldn't hear what was going on in the two rooms. The static crunch every 8 seconds was really disruptive when I was trying to sleep. Also, after using the monitor the first week, I noticed that it would shut off randomly. I use AC power and battery backup, so I'm confident power failures weren't the cause. The bottons were all still in the on position but the video and sound wouldn't be working. I had to turn the reciever unit on and off a few times before it would resume operation. Needless to say, I've returned it and am using one from Summer that doesn't make noise when it flips between the cameras.
Not the best out there
I bought this camera so I could have it flip between two cameras, one in each of my children's bedroom. That doesn't work because while it will flip there is click that is loud enough to disturb you when you are trying to sleep at night (and sometimes even as you are trying to relax before bedtime.) Because of where the cameras are positioned in the rooms I have to adjust the brightness on the monitor when I switch the cameras. The biggest issues I have with the camera is based on the design. The button to switch between cameras is nice and big on the front but the switch to turn on the screen is a tiny switch on the side that I find hard to flip. I had to tape over the plug for the A/V because the power plug fits into it and one night I plugged the power into the A/V plug and the battery died on me in the middle of the night without my being any wiser until I woke up on my own. On the pro side I have not really had many problems with interference.
Personally I like the Summer Infant video monitor. It is a bit big and clunky but the battery is great and you can use a second monitor with it but it does not automatically flip between the two.
