Not for me...I like many other first time moms bought this pump by reading the reviews. I thought for sure that this pump would have been the best of the best. Based on Medela website it works wonders for building up milk supply and is the closest pump to hospital grade. My husband and I thought that buying this pump would save us money in the long run, and we would be able to use it for future use. After buying this pump I used it around the clock non-stop for 4 weeks. It did nothing for my milk supply. I was able to express more milk by hand than I was with the pump. At first it seemed as though the suction was bad. After looking at the faceplate we noticed it had a crack. I called Medela and they sent a new one right away. After replacing the faceplate, the suction was still very little. Once I decided to send to pump back I called Medela and was told that once the faceplate is removed, you have to "reset" the pump. With the operator on the phone I did as she said, and still very little suction. I suggust that anyone who is looking into buying this pump have a great milk supply before hand. Buyers beware.
The Medela pump is best!
I've tried multiple pumps. Medela is best by far. I have the freestyle. It has good suction, it has a timer (which in my opinion, is vital for successful pumping). You can make it hands free (another very important factor for our busy life styles). Its easy to clean and use.
The first medela I had fell off a desk and stopped working. DO NOT DROP YOUR PUMP.
I called the company and they offered very good customer service. I had failed to register my original pump but they still gave me 30 percent off a new one and free one day shipping.
It is an expensive pump but so worth the money. If you plan to pump don't do what I did and buy multiple pumps before you get a medela.
My Wife says: Great pump.. worth the money
My wife has had this Medela Pump for 6 months and loves it. She pumps bottles for our son to receive while she is at work. She uses it every night and finds it to be very powerful. The pump is heavy but the shoulder bag contains it perfectly. It is also convenient that it can run on battery, as she had to use it once discretely in the back seat of our crew cab truck (with tinted windows, of course) on a long trip. She called it a "lifesaver."
Based on how much she likes this model, it seems safe to say that this pump is worth every penny!
happy mom
after trying a manual pump and then a single electric pump, my Medela pump in style is the best. It's not as noisy as the other single electric and of course, I can get twice the pumping done in 1/2 the time! I have also had questions that I have directed thru the Medela website and they have been prompt in their replies.
Expensive but necessary
I'm a stay at home mom so 99% of the time I breastfeed but I needed a pump to go back to work for a week and for the occasional night or weekend away. I tried to get by with the manual pump and after several tries I just could not get it to work. My hand would get tired and the suction was just not strong enough to get much out. I was AMAZED when I started using this. It did not hurt at all - I use the suction at a little over halfway. It is a but loud but they all are.
I have very small breasts (even while breastfeeding I'm still an A) and the shields that came with the pump work fine for me. Smaller ones might work better but I don't have any problems with these.
The bag is nothing special. I wish it had a little more space in it for some personal belongings so that I didn't have to bring a purse in addition to this bag. It didn't even have room for a wallet, cell phone and keys.
The suction/speed is only one knob that controls both. It would be nice to have them separate if you want stronger stronger suction and slower speed.
Overall this is a great pump. I don't know if it's worth the price but in my opinion it's a necessity.

The best pumpIf your serious about breastfeeding and your a working mother. This is the best pump to have. So you can still provide and give your baby milk.
Purchased as gifts for daughter and daughter-in-law.
Both daughter and daughter-in-law received this item as a gift from me. Both were very appreciative and after months of use, not one complaint.
Great product
I got this pump as I went back to work with my second child. I rented a pump with the first. This one is just fine, and I can't tell any difference fir my needs between it and the hospital grade one I used to rent. I got the backpack just because it was cheaper than the shoulder bag model. The backpack turned out to be nice because I have to carry a work bag and daycare bag and a baby too! I was able to find some little adapters that make it possible to pump directly into the avert bottles we use.
Did I get a lemon? Time will tell
Generally, I liked the pump, so why 3 stars only?
Pros: pretty small and light-weight. Dual-phase expression is comfortable. About as good as it gets for a double-electric pump of good quality, weight-wise. I like the backpack too - one less thing hanging off my shoulders (I use public transport in my commute to work so this is quite meaningful to me). Another plus is that if you rented a Medela Symphony or Lactina pump in the hospital, you will be able to use everything that came with that pump with your PIS, except the tubes (which aren't expensive).
Cons: mine died after 4 months! I turn it on and there is only a clicking noise. I bought it new, I am the only user, and have not used it outside normal guidelines. (See below for Medela's response to this problem, which was good.) I also second what other posters have written - the backpack is cheaply made, as all the tabs on the zippers fall off quickly. There also isn't much room inside; once you have the cold pack with storage bottles, you can hardly get flanges and other necessities in. (I eventually bought a second set of the flanges and connectors that stayed at work, so I didn't have to try to shove them in.)
I bought this pump from a local breastfeeding resource center (wish I had bought on Amazon - would have saved $$!). After 4 months, the motor completely died, and as it is under warranty, Medela is overnighting me a new one (it died yesterday, I should have a new one today). They will ship my old one back free of charge. SAVE YOUR RECEIPT. If this happens to you, you will need to prove to Medela that you bought the pump. I think this early death of the pump is unusual in terms of what I have heard from other moms: we have several in my office who have had their PIS for years through multiple children, and it still works. That being said, I can say that the newer models are INFINITELY more comfortable than the old models (I am using a borrowed old model - some ten years old! - while I wait for my new pump). I especially like the two-phase expression: that is so much easier on the nipples. I did use the Medela Symphony for the first few months while at home, in comparison, I think this is slightly less effective, but it does the job comfortably.
A must purchase for new moms
Purchased this for my daughter-in-law. She absolutely loves it. She has been using it daily for over a month and has not experienced any problems with it. She loves the backpack style bag which is convenient to take along anywhere.

Customer Reviews
Beware - Lactation Consultants Advise Against This PumpI have owned this pump for 7 months now. I have been using it at least 4x a day for the past 5 months. I love how portable the pump is. I can take it anywhere. I take it to and from work every day. I also prefer the larger valve on this pump to the smaller valves on the other medela styles. I love the monitor showing me how long I have pumped for. And the option to switch between the fast pumping and the let down mode. Lastly, I love that it runs on a rechargable battery. I can go at least 2 days without charging it.
However, during the past several weeks, my milk supplied has taken a major dip. I spoke with a few lactaction consultants, and companies who rent out medical grade pumps, and the consensus is that this is not the best medela pump and it does not simulate the baby's sucking as well as the pump in style advanced. They say that the pump in style advanced is 'stronger.' They have suggested that I rent a medical grade pump to boost my supply, however, once I go back to exclusively using the freestyle, my supply would probably dip down again.
Given that advice, I strongly suggest you speak with other lactaction consultants if you plan to use this pump several times a day while at work or perhaps pump exclusively. And you should look into the pump in style advanced models.
I do not regret my choice in this pump since it is so portable and convenient. I have thought about purchasing a pump in style advanced to keep in my office and to use this at home and for travel. At this point though, I am just hoping that they get the freestyle up to par with the pump in style advanced by the time I have my next child!!
(oh and if you are wondering about the handsfree option on this pump, I personally do not use it regularly, though I have tried it several times and once you get the settings right, it is fairly simple to put together.)
Best Pump!
I have had this pump for a about 2 months. In comparison to the PIS Original this pump is 100 times better! It expresses milk quickly. It is much quieter than the original. Does not hurt at all. The rechargeable battery power is plus because there are no outlets to plug in at my work. You can pump for several sessions before needing a recharge. I highly recommend this pump.
Needs Improvement
After using the Medela Symphony pump for a month after the birth of my daughter, I purchased the Medela Freestyle. The main reason for my choice had to do with portability. However, the Medela Freestyle is a disappointment for several reasons.
1.) The Freestyle has a strong vibration that the Symphony did not have. It is irritating to sensitive breast tissue, and quite frankly, sets my teeth on edge. In fact, it kind of gives me the creeps.
2.) The suction on my model decreased after less than one month of use. While there are nine levels of power, the suction only moderately increases for six of them - at which point, it just seems as if the vibration is getting stronger without the suction. This does nothing for improving production.
3.) Portability isn't all that is cracked up to be. The system weighs less than a pump in style. But, you aren't going to be up walking around with it.
4) As for being hands free, I still use a specialized bra instead of the freestyle equipment, which is a bit intimidating. This can be done with any model.
5) The pieces are a pain to clean. But, pieces on all of the pumps are a pain to clean.
For more than $300 for a simple piece of equipment, Medela pumps should be made with better quality. I am so sorry that I purchased this, although I don't know if any of the other models would be any better. At least they wouldn't have the creepy vibration which belongs more in an adult book store than on a breast pump.
Medela Freestyle Breast Pump
Absolutely wonderful! It works great and so easy to travel with! The only negative is that it seems a lot louder than my previous Medela Pump. If I wake up to pump I have to go into a different room because it wakes my husband!
Just stopped working barely into 5 months !
I purchased my Medela Freestyle on Feb 8 2010 and started seeing the reduction in suction power a week back and first thought its the battery problem and y'day night it just stopped working even with the power charger connected !! Can't even call them as today (7/5) is a holiday so have to call them t'rrow to figure out the options.... Issue is I am a working Mom so not sure how I will survive for the next week or so when I send this for repair and wait for them to send the replaced unit (hoping hey will replace as its still under warranty) !!

Weak pump and gets milk in the tubingWhat a huge waste of money. I have a Pump in Style Advanced which I love. But I leave it at work and one day, I was staying home sick when I realized that my baby was at daycare and my pump was at work and I was in trouble. So, I went out and dropped $150 on the Medela Swing. I was pleased with my purchase since I liked my pump in style so much and I thought this would be fine for very occasional use. First of all, the swing has increadibly weak suction. It took me over 30 minutes on each side just to get my breasts down to a comfortable level, not even to empty them completely! I shudder to think what this one sick day of pumping will do to my supply for the next few days. Plus, the little white flange doesn't open and close with each pump like it's supposed to. As a result, your milk gets trapped in the little yellow flap and then flows up into the tubing! If you are buying a breast pump, please please please shell out the extra money for the Pump In Style.
Great inexpensive pump
My son was born over 6 weeks early. Because I am also a working mom, we didn't work too hard on breast feeding since he would need to take a bottle when I returned to work. So, I had the hospital rental for two months and purchased the Swing after that. I was leery of spending a ton of money for an item that I was unsure how long I would use it for. In hindsight, I probably would have spent the extra money for the Pump-In-Style...but I am very pleased with the Swing. I used the Swing to pump exclusively for the following three months. It worked fantastic. I did have milk back up the tube once or twice. I had to replace the valves when the suction wasn't quite right also. But, I consider that level of maintenance acceptable. I had no problems with milk supply, and although I only pumped for 5 months, my son was exclusively on breast milk (well, with some formula supplementing it for added calories) for 6 months. I probably got about 4 ounces in 20 minutes, which was comparable to my hospital pump. I would say that a negative would be that it is only a single pump...but at times, that was a plus since I could have one hand free to get some work done! I would say that the volume is average. If one is on a budget, I would certainly recommend this pump. My husband and I are planning for number two, and I am considering purchasing a double pump just for the time factor, but I read an excellent idea on here, a second Swing! I may go that route, I am pleased enough to purchase it again. For the cost-benefit ratio, this pump is a winner!
Breastfeeding our second child...
With my first child, i used the Medela Harmony manual breast pump, so that is the previous pumping experience I have to compare with. I insisted on getting an electric pump with our second child and do not regret my decision. The Harmony is a great pump for the price and I know of women who used it exclusively and went back to work. However, for me, I pumped less and less as I began to dread the pumping process with a manual pump. Partly because I was lazy, and partly because I have mild arthritis in my hands. So, since I am a stay-at-home-mom, I decided buying a double pump was a bit over-kill. So, the Medela Swing seemed like my best option. I LOVE IT! It works so effortlessly. I can easily pump one side while baby is feeding on the other side. (I'm sure it was quite entertaining for my husband watching me try to do that a few years ago with our first baby and the manual pump!) I will suggest that you buy extra breast shields because they do seem to warp, even when you don't put them in the dishwasher, but they aren't that expensive. I can't imagine buying a stronger pump, as I haven't even put the Swing pump on its highest setting and seem to get out plenty of milk in a small amount of time. I think a stronger pump may hurt...??? I like the travel-friendly size of the Swing pump, too. We have lots of family out of state, and with two little ones, it is easier to fly. The less you pack on a flight, the better. You can put batteries in it, or plug it in. Overall, I would recommend this pump to any stay-at-home-mom tired of wearing her hands out on a manual pump. For the working mom (even part-time), I would suggest you get, the Pump In Style Advance, as it would make your life easier...
I Exclusively Pump With the Swing!
After bringing my daughter home from the hospital we continued to have breastfeeding problems. We were told at the hospital that she was slightly tongue tied so we had problems with her latch. Worried that she was not eating enough I bought this the next day and I'm now exclusively pumping with the Swing.
Pros:
-Easy to take apart.
-Easy to clean.
-Easy to pack around.
-Just as efficient as a double hospital grade pump.
-The let-down function is very effective.
-Adjustable speeds makes pumping more comfortable.
-I'm not tied to my pump as this is also battery operated I can hang it from my neck (with the strap provided) and go about my daily tasks!
Cons:
-Others may not like that it is a single pump, but since I have no production problems I'm able to pump both sides in less than 20 minutes.
Baffled and Frustrated
I am baffled by the positive reviews for this product, and completely frustrated that I wasted my money on it. I rented Medela's Symphony pump and then purchased the Pump in Style Backpack and LOVED them both. I got the Swing pump because I lost my Pump in Style and I wanted to save money. Big mistake. I am so unhappy with the Swing Pump. The motor is weak; it is terrible at expressing milk. Please don't make my mistake. Get one of the other Medela pumps.

I'm glad I bought thisThe accessory kit has been used a lot. The extra bottles come in handy because now I can pump and store without worrying about not having bottles for my next pump. I wish the set also came with extra collars and nipples. The nipples are not so mush of a problem as the collars are...I can find the nipples here at Amazon.com but they don't sell the collars.
The extra breast shields also comes in handy because I always have a set on hand while the other is being washed and dried. The only difference is the clear part of the shields that came with my pump came in 2 parts where as the shields with this set is one piece.
I haven't used the micro bags yet since I have the Avent Micro sterilizer. I'll probably save these bags and use them when we go travelling.
love it!
I really like this product. it worked for the pumb that I got as a gift and its easy to use but I would have bought two just in case if I lost one or something but its a great product and the seller that I bought it from was great.
OK but isn't compatible with Medela Swing breastpump
Buyers should be aware that the breastshields are not compatible with the Medela Swing breastpump. I ordered both the same day and didn't expect they wouldn't match.
Otherwise the kit seems to be ok.
NOT COMPATIBLE WITH FREESTYLE
For some reason it doesn't even say this on the box. If you have a different kind of pump, it looks awesome, all the stuff you need.
Perfect Extra Set
This was the perfect addition as an extra set for storage and pumping, as I pump throughout the work day. I highly recommend it to anyone who needs extra shields and storage bottles.

Medela Breastmilk Bottles: Freeing Nursing Mothers Everywhere!
I breastfeed. Let’s scarcely get that out of the way. Obviously, I believe it to be a superior form of infant nutrition. At the same time, I realize that formula can be a necessity in some circumstances and I am not flourishing to judge a mother for using it. I don’t walk in anyone’s shoes but my own. I do take major issue with formula itself, and the companies that acquire it. As Kimberly #22 said, formula is made in ways that most of us would cringe to know. It’s not good stuff beyond its skill of sustaining life. One can eat an apple or they can take a factory synthesized vitamin containing all the nutrients that an apple contains. Simply it is preferable to eat the apple. And just like all vitamins are not created equal, neither is all formula.
There is no standard to which formula companies are held in synthesizing the nutrients it contains. Many contrasting methods are used and some are questionable in nature. The vitamins and minerals that occur within our food naturally are different from the vitamins and minerals contained in modus operandi and synthetic vitamin supplements. Whole food based vitamin supplements contain vitamins and minerals derived in a little while from food, for example, beta carotene, versus Vitamin A Palmitate. Formula is not whole food based. It is a gleaning of factory synthesized vitamins and minerals and food derived nutrients. Even the milk that formula contains is not the same as the exploit that comes out of a cow, it is a synthesized milk product originally derived from cow’s milk. These companies are not bastions of ethics, integrity, or thoughtful compassionate caring for our kids. They are looking at their bottom dollar and what is cheapest to manufacture.
