It works but it's very hotI bought the Ergo baby carrier along with the Heart2Heart Infant Insert for my 3rd baby. He was born in March and I have used this carrier with the insert with him since he was 2 weeks old. It worked GREAT when he was that little. The insert kept him snuggled close and really supported him in the upright position. However, that was at the beginning of April, when it is still cooler weather outside (low 70's). In the mornings it was still cool enough to put him in the carrier and walk my oldest daughter to school. By the afternoon, though, it was way too hot (mid-to-upper 70's) to have him bundled inside the insert for any length of time. Now that it's July, I can't put him in the insert outside at all, it's just too hot. I live in Okinawa, Japan, but the humidity and heat here are very similar to that of Florida summers (I've lived there, too). Now that my son is 3 months old and has good head control I can take the base out of the insert and use just that in the carrier, to prop him higher so he's not sitting below the top of the carrier. But if he didn't have good head control I could not do this and the insert would've been a waste of money. So if your baby is due in spring or summer and you live in a hot/warm climate, I wouldn't bother with the infant insert. It will just make you and the baby way too hot. I do totally recommend the Ergo baby carrier, though. I wish I'd had it when my older two were babies!
I love it, the baby loves it!
I was a little skeptical after reading some reviews of the infant insert, but I decided to try it out anyway. I have used the Bjorn and various maya type slings, and this is by far the most comfortable carrier. I'm prone to plugged ducts and mastitis, and this carrier with the insert puts no pressure on my chest, so it's great in that regard.
I started using the infant insert when my newest was almost 3 weeks old. It was a little hard to figure out where her feet and legs go at first, and she was really uncomfortable when I tried to splay them out and have her feet poke out the sides. That's definitely not the way to do it with such a little baby. I found that the trick is to have her knees up following the line of the fabric just along the inside of the padding and her feet almost touching and down at the V shaped base. You may think they're getting squished but she doesn't complain at all so it must be comfortable for her.
I also couldn't figure out whether she was supposed to have her head resting on the top edge, kind of sitting away from my body or resting on my chest. She took care of that for me. When she's awake her head is up and she's peering around. When she gets tired she puts her head down on my chest and rests very comfortably.
The hotness factor was also something I read about. My daughter was born in mid June and we live in Maryland, where it's pretty hot and humid in the summer. Yes, the insert is hot. But so is the Bjorn, and so are slings. I just put her in a onesie and we're both a little damp on the chest when she comes out. No big deal, really. I think the pros outweigh the one con that it's hot.
So it does take a little fiddling to get it just right, but once you do it's super comfortable for you as the wearer, and a nice little nest for the baby to ride around in. I definitely recommend it!
Didn't really work for us
I ordered the heart to heart insert after trying to use the original infant insert with my Ergo carrier. My daughter LOVES to be held on my chest. She often falls asleep that way. I was having a hard time figuring out how to use the original infant insert and came across the heart to heart insert (I didn't realize there were two when I ordered the original). I had used the original insert a few times and she would just fall asleep in it, but I was never really sure if I had her positioned correctly. So I decided to get the heart to heart. I tried to use the heart to heart a few times, but she would just cry when I put her in it. I ended up going back to the original insert and sending back the heart to heart. Once she got a bit bigger (she was only 6 lbs when she was born), I found the original insert worked just fine. Also, I agree with a few other reviewers that the Ergo is really hot. My baby was born in April and we've tried using the Ergo but it has just been too hot. I also have a Baby Bjorn, which is not much better in hot weather. The one thing I REALLY like about the Bjorn is that she can face out. She loves being held facing out, so I got the Bjorn so I could actually get my hands back. It has worked great so far. I think the Bjorn is much easier to figure out.
to small for my son
My son is 2 months old and when I put him in the insert, he was too big for it so I just use the cushion to boost him up higher so that he is where I want him in the carrier.
this has given me back my life!!
My son is fairly fussy - but if I put him in the infant insert and walk around he stops crying. I'm not afraid to go out to the store anymore because I know that I can just put him in the insert and he'll calm down when we walk around. He often falls asleep in it. I also use it at home during the day so that I have my hands free - since he can't hold up his neck on his own yet. It was a little warm - but when we are at home I just leave him in his onesie and I wear a light cotton shirt. I haven't tried breast feeding with it - so can't comment on that. Great product for anyone that wants their hands free and has a fussy baby who wants to be held all the time. Also, ergobaby has a great website with videos on how to use the insert - this will make sure you position the baby correctly.

Ergo Baby Infant Insert - wouldn't go without it!We have a newborn and the Ergo Baby Carrier. It helps to push him up from his bottom to fit correctly in the carrier. When I take him out of the carrier he will stay asleep as I place him in his bassinet.
Super Comfy
I loved using this with my newborn who was born at the end of October. It's fairly bulky though, so unless I knew I'd be sitting around in air-conditioning, it might be too hot for some situations during the summer. I tolerate the bulk because of the comfort. It's not ideal, but I really don't think it would be as comfortable as it is without all the padding! It's also not as nice to need a flat surface to lay the baby down on in order to be able to wear the baby--mostly annoying when I wasn't at home, but, again, it really didn't bother me because it was so nice once I was wearing the baby. I know from experience that there is no such thing as a perfect baby carrier and I've owned a few. The Ergo is still my favorite and this insert made it possible to use with a newborn. I really loved how secure she was and seemed very comfortable. It was very comfortable for me and I was able to get a lot done while wearing the baby. I love that the baby isn't "hanging" off of me. My kids are not small on the growth charts, but are small compared to all the other giant babies we know, so a really big baby might not be able to use quite as long, but I felt like I was definitely able to use it as long as expected.
Really good product!
I bought the insert because I would like to use the Ergo carrier with my newborn daughter, and it was perfect for her!Very easy to use, comfortable, I am very happy with it!
Waste of money
They are trying to make it so you can use your newborn in it. Well, floppy newborns need more support than this. My son wasn't happy in there. And still, I was afraid of his head flopping around when I did put him in there. Now he is older and doesn't flop, but he doesn't need this. So it was a waste of money for me.
Love it!
I never had the insert with my first, but don't think I could live without it now! Baby loves being so snuggly and close and it is so easy for me to out her in and get my things done. I love the Ergo carrier anyway, and I think this insert is ingenious.

Color is differentThe color for this insert was described as "beige",but it is not. For my opinion, it is "peach" not "beige". Keep that in mind if you order it for a boy.Ergo Baby Carrier Insert- Beige
Has made our lives so easier
My baby was very fussy, gassy/colicky and wanted to be held all of the time. This and the Ergo baby carrier have made us both a lot happier and made my life easier. She is very comfortable and well supported and I did not have to struggle with the learning curve that goes along with some other babywearing options. As a first time mom, that has made the difference. I would recommend this product, along with the baby carrier, to anyone who wants to enjoy a hands-free option to hold and walk with their baby. It is fantastic. The only downside is that it is a bit cumbersome and warm for the hotter summer weather, but all in all the pros outweigh the cons.
Awesome for the tiniest ones
We ordered our Ergo when our son was 2 weeks old and ordered this insert style at the same time.
When he was at his tiniest, this was perfect for snugging him right up next to us and keeping him warm (a Winter baby). If I was inside and it was warm, I'd strip him down to a onesie for his own comfort.
Now that his legs poke out and it's getting warmer, we've taken the the little butt cushion insert out and use it as a 'booster' so he doesn't sink down all the way and can still get a good look around.
Ergo doesn't advertise this secondary use, but it's definitely a great bonus for baby's 'transition' length.
Love this!
I am a first time mom and I purchased the Ergo carrier and the orignal insert. Once this new one came out I had to try it out. Its great. Baby seems much more comfortable in a seated position. He is now 6 months old (a big 6 month old) and has moved onto no insert. but while we were using it, it was terrific. The Ergo carrier is awesome. I use it all the time and its really comfortable to wear for long periods of time.

Not neededMY infant never used it lot ... save your money you dont really need it.
Some newborns just don't like the Ergo
I bought the Ergo carrier and the infant insert to use with my daughter from birth, after hearing rave reviews of it. We needed a carrier with more support than the Bjorn or others, as my husband has back problems. The hip belt is a good solution -- it feels much like our packs for backpacking.
However much we like the carrier, though, my six-week-old daughter hates it. I've been trying to get her into the Ergo using the infant insert repeatedly ever since she was born, but with no success. The moment I put her (in the insert) into the Ergo carrier, she starts screaming and doesn't stop until I take her out. I've watched the video and am following their technique exactly, but still she just hates the carrier. (Note: don't read the instructions that come with the insert -- they're misleading -- watch the video instead.)
I've now tried both the old infant insert shown here and the new Heart 2 Heart insert, and neither one works for my daughter. Neither one provides enough head support for her, which is why I think she screams. The inserts themselves do come up around her head, but they're not stiff enough to support her, and the carrier itself doesn't come up high enough to add the needed support (and she's not particularly long for her age). The only solution is to cinch the carrier so tight that her head is forced against my chest and can't move in any direction, which she also hates.
I've done a bit of research now and it appears this isn't uncommon. Many newborns don't do well with the Ergo, but they take to it once they're 4 or 5 months old and can hold their heads up, at which point there's no need for the infant insert. The insert itself feels like a bit of an afterthought, in fact -- it seems like the carrier simply wasn't designed for newborns. Having the baby's feet out one side seems like a stopgap solution to compete with other carriers that are pitched to newborns. So it's worth knowing before buying this insert that it may or may not be money well spent -- it all just depends on whether your child likes it or not, so it might be worth waiting until after your baby is born and trying it out before buying it.
Didn't care for AT ALL
My baby screamed every time I put him in this. I am going to wait until he's old enough to not need the infant insert to use my ERGO carrier because this thing was a nightmare. I watched countless videos on how to put your baby in it and even had a friend of mine who uses the ERGO with her infant show me, but neither me nor my baby was comfortable with this bulky insert.
Watch the DVD and you WILL have no problems...
Just watch the DVD that came with the ERGO baby carrier and you should have no problems. Here's a breakdown of what I did.
1.) Put the ERGO carrier on but just the waist belt. DO NOT PUT ON THE SHOULDER STRAPS TILL LATER!!!
2.) I would swaddle my baby and than put her in the insert. Reason for this is once she fell asleep I can just lay her in the crib without waking her. One more thing...The top of my baby's head would be leveled with the top of the infant insert allowing her to have head support. She would pretty much look like a taco.
3.) Next I would pick her up and hold her head at my heart and her feet at my right side hip. Next you have to put the shoulder straps on while you hold your baby. After about 3 times I was able to complete my routine in about 30 sec.
4.) After she's in the carrier I would make little adjustments for comfort.
As you can see I did not have to hold my baby over my head like one of the reviewers stated. Not rocket science people just watches the DVD. Oh and my daughter was about 90th percentile in weight and high 80's in height.
Use a blanket or small towel instead
As much as we love the Ergo Baby, this insert thing just frustrated us. It doesn't really fit very well and is hard to get in place. We watched the video over and over...
It's very floppy / flimsy and really doesn't provide any support for the babies head (which is why we thought it would be good to have)
We ended up using a lightweight fleece blanket about 2-1/2 foot square.
I don't think you need this.
